Okay, so now I am over the disappointment and guilt thing of not being successful at breastfeeding and my milk drying up, I need to think practically!!

We have been using the odd carton of ready made formula but they are hideously expensive so I have bought a tub of powder formula today. The only thing is it would appear you need to know in advance the exact time your LO might want to eat in order to boil a kettle, let it cool for half an hour, add the powder, then let it cool further!!! Can't see this happening at 4am in the morning!!

Obviously don't want to put LO's health at risk in any way, but does everyone do it like this? For instance, I know LO will want a feed in roughly 2 hours time, so if I prep it now can I just leave it made up at room temp on the side? Or do I need to make it and put it in the fridge? But then it says it can't be reheated!!!

How do other people do it?? And does the age of your LO affect what you do?? Evie is only a couple of weeks old, but she is quite happy to take room temp (or even colder!) milk. She really doesn't care as long as it's going down the hatch!!!

Everyone has different opinions on this but here is what I did!
I sterilised all 6 bottles for 24 hours and just added water to the bottles! Put them together and left them on the side! Then When a feed is needed just add the powder and heat up!

Think the formula is supposed to be added to hot water, at least 70 degrees to kill of any bacteria cos the powder isn't sterile. We make up a days worth of bottles and store in the fridge. They can keep for 24 hours in the fridge. We warm them up in a jug of hot water when needed.

I do two or three bottles of water at a time and leave them on the side....add powder and heat when needed....then when I use the last one I make up another two or three bottles of water and so on!

It's each to their own on this one. Personally I made 6 bottles of water up for the day but would put less than I needed in each bottle and then when she needed a feed I'd add the extra oz of boiling water and then add the formula. It was always perfect temperature.

I think if I'd known before I would have put sophie straight on comfort milk as you make it up with boiling water and so it's completely sterile and you can then premake them and know there's no problems with them

What is comfort milk?? She is on ready made SMA gold at the moment but has been switching between EBM and formula so don't think she's that fussy!!

It's for babies with colic and constipation. I think all babies get constipated at some point and had I known I could have stopped her struggling to poo I'd have switched a lot sooner!

This might be what I need - Evie hasn't had a poo since Thu!!!!!!!! Getting v worried about it now (and to think I used to have a job and a life!!). Spoke to my SIL who is a midwife support assistant and she said it was fine and it's the gradual switch to formula that has slowed her insides down, but can't imagine it feels great to have that much poop inside you!! And I'm dreading the nappy when it finally appears....

give her cooled boiled water to help with the pooping. i sterilise the bottles as i use them and i just fill the kettle and boil it then use that water to make up a bottle, i tend to have a cuppa while i have a hot kettle lol. if i dont make one with that water i'll tip it out and refill and boil again in a few hours time. that way i always have a kettle full of recently boiled water thats at room temp at least lol

Luckily Poppy feeds like clockwork, so I make them up fresh. I did try different ways though, but ended up feeling guilty about it. She's not on as much milk now as she used to be because she's on proper food now. The only thing I'd say is; don't add the powder to cool water, it does need to be hot to kill a certain bacteria that the milk powder carries. It's something I read on the food standards agency website. x

Adding to that if you make the bottle
up fresh and then put it under cold running water and it doesn't take long to cool at all really.

This is what i do too, for 3 /4 am feed i take the bottle from the fridge at put in cool bag and bring it up with me when im going to bed and just give it at the temp it is then, which is usually almost room temp , I am questioning this one at d minute then i use a carton of ready made for her 6/7am feed

I use sma and never seen anything saying you should not reheat?

i just make up bottles put them into the fridge and reheat as i need them..i use comfort too i find it great,lo started on sma gold..

Have caved and bought some more ready made stuff for the night feeds but have managed to make up feeds using the powder today as could predict when she would need them and was able to get them done before. Think I will be brave and make up the two night feeds and store them in the fridge when I run out of the latest ready made stuff. She took to the powdered stuff no problem - she really is such a good baby - I am totally spoilt!!

P.S. Day 5 and still no poo...

ive seen it advised to put a few drops of pure orange juice in water to cure constipation in babies. i think it was 2 teaspoons in two oz of water.

This is what I do. Cos you can't use re-boiled water I have to do it this way, as soon as the kettle goes on everyone comes out to make a cuppa. I threatened my OH with a teaspoon the other day cos he was going to use the water I'd just managed to boil lol
