Hi,

My husband and I found out last week that we were pregnant for the first time. We used a Clear Blue digital test on Wednesday evening and were absolutely over the moon. The first day of my last AF was 03.03.18 and we DTD on 24.03.18. This made me 5 weeks as of the Saturday just gone. But, Saturday morning I had a bleed in the shower (bright red). It wasn’t anything massive, but as I was in the shower it’s hard to say just how much. It seemed less than I would have whilst on my period. There were no clots at all and I’ve been checking my pads and when going to the toilet since and there’s been no more red bleeds. Prior to this I have had browny spotting and have had a small amount of brown on the TP since.

I rang NHS Direct and went to see the Out of Hours doctor. She did a urine pregnancy test which was negative and said that we had had an early miscarriage. We were devastated. After reading some posts about the reliability of Dr tests, we decided to do another digital test yesterday (Sunday) and it was positive. I fear this could simply be due to my hormone levels as I’ve heard that tests can remain positive for up to a week after a m/c. I still haven’t released any clots etc and was starting to wonder whether I may still be pregnant.

I have had mild cramps (mostly to the left) throughout the pregnancy, had backache, headaches and have been feeling nauseous. I still have the mild cramps on and off, and last night had a dull ache in my right waist area a little to the back. I also had very irritating leg aches with a burning sensation to my lower right leg (do with hormones?) and aches in my upper right thigh/buttock.

I went to see my local doctors today and she confirmed that it can take up to 2 weeks for any release of tissue/clots etc following a m/c and she didn’t want to send me for a scan as it wouldn’t show anything to help at this stage (i.e. no heartbeat etc). However, she did do a pregnancy test which was faint but positive.

So now it’s just a waiting game, which seems the hardest thing. We're hoping the bleed wasn’t a m/c and everything is still safe. I just have to resist the urge of doing another test every day!

Has anyone else experienced something similar? We so hope we are still pregnant but I am trying to also remember that it could be sad news :(

TIA
Lucy x

Hi Lucy,

I'm sorry you're having a difficult and confusing time. Does your hospital or maternity unit have an early pregnancy unit? If so, they are the best people to call in my opinion. They will probably agree that a scan is not the best idea due to gestation but they might do blood tests a couple of days apart to see if your hcg is rising.

If you don't know if there is one, call the local maternity unit and ask, that's how I got hold of mine as no webpages really advertised the fact it was there.

I wish you luck, please do let us know how you get on xx

Hi LyndseyB,

Thank you :) My friend advised me to do that too but I checked online and they state (in BOLD) that they don't accept self-referrals, only referrals from the GP. My GP didn't mention about blood tests and I'm kicking myself that I didn't either :( Do you think it is still worth the call as we do have one at our nearest hospital? I'm worried about getting a bolshy person on the other end of the phone, I'm a little delicate at the moment lol.

You're right, it is a confusing time...we have no idea what we are doing and what to expect being first timers, but I feel you lovely forum buddies are going to be a great help :) x

Aww lucy sorry you are going through this, you just want to know one way or another . It's a shame your early pregnancy unit doesn't accept drop ins, mine does and it was a life saver when I too had a early bleed. I even had clots but a internal scan at 7 weeks showed everything was good. I would give your local hospital a call even if you have to tell them about the tests the gp did giving you mix signals.

Thank you for your reply too Claire :D It's good to know that everything was fine with you and gives me some hope that everything could be ok :) I think I will give them a ring and see what they say...they can only say 'No' right?. I just need to get the courage to pick up the phone. :/

I'm sorry you're going through this. A few of the symptoms you're mentioning would make me want a scan to check the pregnancy hasn't been ectopic. One sided pain, joint pain at your wrist, feeling unwell etc.

Hi SF2018, thank you for you message :) I mentioned my concerns about being ectopic and my GP said it would be v unlikely as it's too early for that to be an issue at this stage (??), but to keep an eye on any severe pain that develops. She felt my stomach and didn't notice anything untoward, not that she probably could at 5 weeks. I don't have wrist ache and haven't had the shoulder tip pain that is usually associated with ectopic pregnancies. The right waist pain has gone today and I only have vv mild cramps to the lower left that come and go. I feel good in myself today but felt awful yesterday...probably due to my rubbish cold and lack of sleep :(

I've just rang the local EPU. The lady on the other end of the phone was lovely but they can't see me without a GP referral :( I'll just watch any symptoms and wait a little longer I guess x
