Luka Alexander Joel born Sunday 6 July 2014 at 8.36 p.m. weighing 8lb 11oz 39+4

Well, my little munchkin arrived on the day of the Tour de France, something I was really worried about happening as I live on the route and the roads around us were going to be closed for 12 hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.! However, my husband and I had made the decision to go out for the day, well away from all Tour de France related stuff.

We got up early at 5 a.m. (our roads was being closed off at 7 a.m.) and headed off to my hubby's office for breakfast as it is very close to the maternity hospital in Sheffield. We had a nice bit of toast and a cuppa, then decided to go for a walk up to Western Park and have a look around the museum there. After that, we went for a drink and a snack in the cafe as I was needing a sit down. Just had time to drink my dandelion and burdock and have a scone and my waters popped in spectacular fashion at about 12.20! They were everywhere, my jeans were soaked! Luckily, I had the foresight to bring towels with me in a carrier bag. My hubby ran off to fetch the car and we went straight around to the hospital, which was literally two minutes away. I am so glad that I made the decision to go out for the day. I know I would have got to the hospital, but it would have been by ambulance and it was so ridiculously busy around us that day I don't now how delayed it would have been.

Contractions started straight away and were pretty close together (three minutes). I'm not going to go into massive detail about the birth, but it was EXCRUCIATING. All the pain of the contractions seemed to be in my lower back. My little man got himself into a very funny position (kind of sideways/back to back) and I needed to be on a trace the majority of the time so I was not a happy bunny as laying on my back made the pain so much worse and I wanted to be on all fours. I somehow managed all the way through on gas and air, although I did ask for an epidural when I was about 4cm dilated. I didn't have one in the end as they were short on anesthetists with it being a weekend, although I do think they told me this to try put me off it. In the end, it was too late to have one. His heart rate was dipping at the pushing stage and I had ventouse delivery as he was a bit stuck. I lost 2 pints of blood and ended up on the HDU with a blood transfusion. Not the nicest labour experience, but he's healthy and doing well and now five weeks old and weighing 11lb 7oz!! :):)
