Lazy ovary?

Ok so I’ve been googling... and I need to know if this a thing!

Basically I’ve been tracking my cycle lengths for a while now and I’ve noticed every alternative month I have a cycle bang on 32 days, the other months vary from 36-43 days. It seems that when I ovulate on one side I’m regular but when with the other side I’m not? Has anyone else ever encountered this?

I also read that if your cycle is more than 35 days then you can’t get pregnant so it seems I only realistically have a chance every other month!

I’ve heard of a lazy ovary, but I’m not sure if what you’ve read is 100%

My mother conceived me with only ovary as she assumed ovulation occurred from every other ovary but the doctor told her that’s incorrect and is in fact random so you could have 10 cycles in a row from the right then two from the left then 5 from the right and so on...

That’s interesting, what else would cause every other cycle to be irratic do you think?

I’m not sure, mine have always been erratic since I started at 11 years old... I have an appointment with a private fertility clinic to investigate things

I suspect it was my B12 levels though, I haven’t long found out I have pernicious anaemia so not sure what that’s had an effect on in 30 odd years not knowing

I also spot from about 5dpo on and off so I think I’ve got a luteal phase defect/ not enough progesterone or something. We’ve been trying for 8 months, just waiting for af to arrive to end cycle 6... it’s so annoying knowing something isn’t right but a doctor won’t see you until you’ve been trying for 12 months.

Ah, I'm the same. My cycles are usually 29-34 days. The longer cycles are ALWAYS when I ovulate on the left (I can tell, can always feel it), I always seem to ovulate later from that side. I thought I must have had a cyst or something, but nope. Nothing wrong with me, lol. You should get it checked out though, because it could be a sign of a hormone imbalance or a cyst. But it could just be what's normal for you.

FWIW Its actually pretty rare to ovulate in a pattern - left, right, left, etc. WelshGirl is right, you can have many cycles where you ovulate on the same side in a row. When you gear up to ovulate both ovaries are making the follicles that contain eggs, its just a race to see which follicle gets to release the egg first. It often is the same side multiple cycles in a row.

Don't fret - you can absolutely get pregnant on cycles longer than 35 days, as long as you're ovulating!! It will just mean you're ovulating later than usual. Eg. on a 28 day cycle you're ovulating on CD14ish, but on a 42 day cycle you're ovulating on CD28ish. Lots of women are waiting for AF at that point, so they miss the egg. It can be done, you just need to be tracking ovulation closely. :)

EDIT: Just saw you said your doc won't see you - they might not see you about fertility treatments until its been 12 months, but if you're having irregular periods, that is something that they should be investigating regardless of TTC or not.

Oh wow! Thanks for the info, I’ve invested in some opks and I’ve started charting temps to see if I can keep a closer eye on my ovulation, I think now I’ve spotted this pattern though I might see if the doc will look into it! Thanks again.

My luteal phase seems to be 10 days which I read is the minimum but I was thinking I may have a progesterone issue too as it goes

I’m going to a private clinic to get a fertility MOT for me and OH as I fear my doctor won’t take me seriously as I’m overweight (I’ve lost over 2 stone but still not there yet) and OH has older kids from a previous relationship. I had my irregular periods investigated when I was in my 20s and all I got was, and I quote: ‘come back when you’ve lost weight and want kids’

It’s awful how medical practitioners treat people! I get they deal with these things Day in day out but honestly they need to learn to have some empathy! I hope you get some answers from your mot, I was thinking of doing one but I don’t think anywhere does it near me and my dh hates it when I suggest anything might be wrong anyway and I can’t fave an argument right now!

It infuriates me that doctors treat women that way. If you go to get any reproductive issue investigated they say "well if you don't want kids right now it doesn't matter what's causing your problems - take this birth control to sort your symptoms out" and then if you are TTC they say "well, wait a year" -_-

I hope you can find a doctor who will listen to you. Keep trying, they do exist!!

My hubby is like that too. He gets grumpy and calls me impatient... He's probably right tbh :P Hopefully yours comes around and agrees to the test. Its not like it can hurt!
