Monday 13th April - 40+3 - After a long walk on the Sunday I woke with some cramping, nothing too strong and regular but definitely signs things were moving in the right direction. After a few trips to the loo my plug was starting to appear! OH was due to leave for work at 12.30pm but by then the cramping had disappeared so I sent him on his way.
17.30 - The cramping came back and began to feel more like contractions but not too painful and weren't really regular. They carried on all through the night. At some points I was getting 4 or 5 of them 3 minutes apart but then the next 4 or 5 would be 8 or 12 minutes apart.
Tuesday 14th April - I carried on like this until 4.30am when I rang labour ward. Labour ward said this was normal and to ring again before coming in but not before contractions were 3 minutes apart and like that for a least an hour.
By 7.30am, the contractions were still irregular but getting painful and I was worried I hadn't felt baby move for a good couple of hours so I rang labour ward again and they said to come in.
We got to hospital about 8.30 am and I went straight onto the CTG machine. Baby was doing well I just couldn't feel her. After the CTG they examined me and I was only 3-4 cm dilated. The midwife managed to give me a stretch and sweep and suggested I went for a walk or could go home for a bit. I opted for the walk.
We got back to the ward after about 1½ hours walking around where the contractions seemed to be getting stronger and more regular but only while I was standing. As soon as I sat or laid down they seemed to disappear for a bit although by now they were really painful. The midwife suggested a bath and some paracetamol and said she would exam me again afterwards.
I spent the next 1½ hours in the bath, which helped loads and then headed back to the ward.
4.10pm - Midwife examined me and I was now only 4-5cm dilated. Gutted!! Although it did mean I could now go to labour ward and start on the gas and air. Midwife came back and asked if I wanted the birthing pool and I was like YES!! So she went off to fill the bath up. When she finally come and got me it was just before 4.30pm and she told me that I might not be able to use the birthing pool because of my high bmi, the fact I had been to fetal health to be monitored with a suspected small baby and that I bled loads after giving birth to my little girl. I argued the point (politely) on the bmi and small baby and she agreed to monitor me for another 20 minutes and get a second opinion with a doctor.
4.40 - I was laying there with the gas and air, contractions were still only every 3 minutes ish and still not regular. Then I really don't know what happened. I was talking to the midwives about names of the baby and another contraction came, so I sucked on the gas and air, then another contraction came, and another and another and I felt the need to push. I still had my jeans on!! So they dragged them off me and another contraction came and I pushed, just couldn't help myself! In the meantime the doctor had appeared and they were still trying to decide if I could go in the birthing pool.
While pushing this almightly explosion happened and I just heard the midwife say 'she has SROM'd' (at which point I had no idea what this meant (waters have broken!)). By now the pain was unbearable and the contractions were constant, I sucked the life out of the gas and air and was off my face and screaming in pain. With every contraction I pushed like crazy it's all I could do. I could hear the midwives telling me to relax my bum cheeks and let my legs go and I just couldn't do it, I remember shouting that I was going to shit myself and they said, no that is your babies head!! So with every ounce of effort I let my legs flop to the side and pushed the head out then the next contraction my baby Eboni was born!
She was born at 5.02pm weighing 7lbs 10oz. I still can't get over how I went from 4-5cm to giving birth in just under an hour!
I've ended up with a 2nd degree tear and stitches but who cares!!
