Jonah Michael Stallard

My waters broke at 35+4, no contractions followed, had to stay in hospital for four days to be monitored for infection as they didnt want to induce me with being early still, finally allowed home on anti biotics and had to go back to hosp regularly to check baby was still happy and no sign of infection. Induction booked for 31st Jan when I would be 37 weeks so no risk of prematurity to baby. Went in for induction, they gave me a stretch and sweep at 10:20 and some prostin gel, they didnt think I would need anything else as cervix was very favourable, but arranged to have drip if nothing had happened by 4:20. At 2:30 I had the first what I would call proper contraction, rather than just a feeble tightening, and at 3:30 after midwife had "watched" my behaviour decided I should go to delivery! They didn't want to check for dilation due to infection risk with prolonged rupture of membranes but judging by my body language etc she didn't think I'd be long! I'd only been in labour an hour!! Moved to delivery, got changed into nightie etc, put on mobile monitor which was great so I could still walk around, be active. Was contracting every 3 mins now and really quite intense, spent most of this time on all fours over the back of a chair, Michael was shoving his fist into my back, couldn't get him to do it hard enough, just as a distraction really. At 5 I decided I needed some G&A as was making a bit of noise and felt I was losing control a bit, then from here on it just got horrific! The pain got hold of me and I was like a woman possessed! Throwing myself around the bed, Michael was really scared watching me, kept hearing him saying "is everything ok, she wasn't like this last time" and he was right, I wasn't, last time was nothing compared to this, midwife just said its because of the gel, there had still been intervention which intensifies things. Your not flippin kidding, honestly if someone could of shot me there and then I'd of let them! Anyway, at 5:58 midwife shouted "flippin heck you've caught me out I can see the head, let's get cracking" and then I just felt my body pushing, but I was still in so much pain, last time I remember the pushing bit was great, not painful, just hard work where as this time I couldn't push for the pain! Thank goodness my body took over cos I just couldn't do it! I managed three active pushes, couldn't do anymore as it hurt to much to push, was begging them to just put me to sleep! But thankfullymy body just expelled him, sounds weird but I didn't really do anything! Anyway, at 6:05 he was put straight on me, Michael cut the cord, only a three and a half hour labour. I had no tears or anything and Jonah fed straight away for 50 mins! He was weighed, 5lb 10 ounce! Then we had four hours solid skin to skin while I was put on a drip to help my uterus contract to minimise blood loss. Then daddy had an hour skin to skin while I showered etc. We were allowed home on Friday evening. Had to stay the 24 hours due to prolonged rupture of membranes, but that's nothing compared to the two weeks Solomon spent in neonatal! Anyway. All in all I'm quite traumatised by the level of pain this time but glad it was quick. And little Jonah is just so scrummy! Thanks for reading!!!! X

Aww hes lovely :-) well done!! I had the gel as well, and I remember thinking the contractions from start to finish were alot more painful and also the pushing was harder even though baby was 2lb smaller then my last. Didnt realise the gel could make such a difference xx

Congratulations Toni, You did so well and he is gorgeous! xxxx

Sounds like you had a rough time in labour hun, but you did extremely well...you should be proud.

And little Jonah is adorable xx

Congratulations Hun so pleased they managed to keep him until he was fully cooked. I can sympathise on the intense nature and speed of your labour (although I didn't have any gel mine was 2.75 hrs start to finish). Lovely that you got such great bonding time and home quickly especially after a special care stay first time round (I felt the same) x

He's a handsome little chap! :) Congratulations! Sounds like you did amazingly!!

Congratulations! Love his name and he's so adorable!

Congratulations! and I love his name too :D He is beautiful! x

Aw he's gorgeous! :-) your sons have brilliant names :-) xx

Congrats and I also love both your boys names! You have scared me a bit with your labour story though, as I had a good 5 hour labour last time and felt exactly the same about pushing as you did - that it didn't hurt and was just hard work. Now I'm worried about number 2!!!! Was it definitely the gel that made it so much more painful?!
