After my OH's recent dilemma of wanting to quit work, he decided to stay there for now.
However, he was in work last night and was told that one of the other kitchen porter's is getting more wages than my OH because he threatened to quit a few weeks ago after arguing with the owner and telling her to 'F off' My OH got extremely angry and refused to clean any more.

I was FUMING when he told me.
Why on Earth would they bribe this member of staff with more wages to stay there when 1. He was rude to the owner and 2. He doesn't clean half as good as my OH.

He also doesn't have a baby on the way, nor does he have any priorities like running a house, where as me and my OH do!

Isn't this a discrimination to my OH and the other kitchen porter? (there's three of them in total)

Yes, you can't pay people doing the same jobs differently! I thought it was illeagal but not sure

Its not illegal if they can justify it, only thing to bear in mind is were he found this info out from coz some people say things like that just to annoy people. Dunno if this is the case but has happened before!!

Pretty sure it's not illegal hun. I used to work as a recruitment consultant and we all had totally different salaries. At one point, I was on £19k and my friend, who was in our team in another office, was on £32k. Shite! But it happens

Now I'm in public sector, it's different as everyone's salary is graded and so every job role has a grade and you won't get people on different salaries iykwim.

Not illegal but should be kept to himself rather than bragging about it

Last year I was earning 18k but my colleague who did exactly the same job as me was only on 12k! It is legal but is usually due to differences in age/experience etc (the girl earning less than me was 18 years old whereas I am ten years older with far more work experience). But it is their discretion at the end of the day.

And, like what Esoames said, your salary really isn't something that should be discussed with other colleagues. It's just one of those things that isn't 'done'. x
