I've read that having a high protein drink before bed helps settle the stomach through night and wondered if having these shakes are safe or if any of you have had them during pregnancy?
My oh is bulking out so he has 2 of these shakes a day last night my tummy was really playing up so oh made me one but didn't do it as strong as his and put loads of milk in just incase and I slept wonders I woke up at 1am for a wee and that's it didn't feel hungry or sick like I usually do neither did I wake up that way either. We've tried googling it but not much is said about it but I don't want to carry on with it and hurt our baby xxx

Anything I have read on whey proteins and pregnancy state not to because it can be harmful - or under doctors advice.

I regularly have a whey protein (not pregnant) however if I was continuing that Id always check with the GP first. (I dont think Id like to give anything that may encourage perhaps too much the growth of baby).

Quite often when you read the label, the amount of vitamins etc sound good however its usually the dosing of the vits that can be an issue.

Perhaps ask GP, if there is a safe one that you can try. Alot are very high in sugar, or have artificial sweetners aside from an array of ingredients lol.

xxxx

From what I understand theres not a lot of research to say if it can be considered safe or not. Which means it's not considered safe.

Midwife might know a specific one though. Would smoothies maybe work for you? X

I have heard mixed things about shakes during pregnancy.
Myself and my DH really enjoy power lifting together, I really wanted to carry on doing some sort of weight training after finding out I was pregnant so that I didn't loose everything I had gained. After reading and reading it seemed shakes were a no go and then hubby decided he would rather me not lift at all 'just in case' anyway, so I am now playing it safe and just stick to walking/swimming, body weight exercises etc.
I think its because so many brands out there are a little dodgy so you cant always guarantee what exactly goes into it, people say some brands are fine for pregnancy and some people have even been recommended them to up protein if they cant fit it into their diet otherwise (I cant remember the exact story on that one), but for the most part its just not worth taking the risk.
Maybe try having a high protein snack instead?

Thanks ladies I'll not touch it any more don't want to risk any thing xxx

maybe try making your own high protein smoothie with peanut butter or something? so you know exactly what's going into it.. It's probably more the full belly of milk that helped you sleep...may have to try it myself :)

I wouldn't risk peanuts ... They can be an allergen, especially if any family members have an allergy.

I over indulged in cheese and chocolate - curiously my boy has a milk allergy which logically makes sense given he was exposed to dairy in huge amounts pre 6m.

peanuts are fine during pregnancy? specially as they are so rich in protein!

peanuts are now recommended in pregnancy to avoid allergies. only to be avoided if either the mother or father have an allergy

Yes, and usually milk is fine in pregnancy but me drinking and eating far too much dairy I now have a CMPA baby - neither of us have a type 1 allergy.

So Id lean to stay away from any possible allergens during pregnancy given what I know now :)
