Is gtt optional?

I'm supposed to have a gtt in 4 weeks and have it booked. The letter says I cannot eat or drink for 12 hours before nor can I take any medicines.

1. I'm on thyroxine which needs to be taken first thing before food or other meds.

2. I get bad heartburn and if not treated set off my reflux and gastritis. Prior to pregnancy I was on lansaprozole for this. Doc took them off me and I now rely on gaviscon to stop a flare up which is excessively painful. Empty stomachs also don't help.

So I'm considering whether i should just cancel. Is it really worth making myself sick or risking my thyroxine dropping?

I’d speak to your GP for advice. Most women who have the GTT have a negative result, but if you did have GD, then you wouldn’t want it to go undiagnosed and untreated. Usually it s controlled with diet, but not always. A friend of mine ended up in hospital with an insulin pump to try and control hers as even the injections weren’t working:

I definitely wouldn't. This is what is dividing me.

It has taken most of my pregnancy so far to balance my thyroxine again too.

I’m not sure on the risks of your other health conditions, but as someone who’s been told I have to have a gtt the other day and done some subsequent reading on gestational diabetes it’s can have some serious effects on the baby. Are you under he consultant? Presumably you’ve had an appointment with one of them already and they know your medical history?

I've had 2 and all she's been interested in is whether I want a vbac or csection.

It's my midwife who booked me in.

are you high risk for GD? any test surely must be optional it just depends whether it is wise or not with your medical history to cancel it

I don't think any test can be forced on you but obviously gestational diabetes can have consequences for you and baby so they will want to investigate. You need to speak to a dr for more advice given your medical condition x

Everything is optional - nothing is compulsory.

I would be inclined to go for it IF I had glucose present in my urine at previous urine tests and if I was putting weight on or measuring over

Mines just because my bmi was high at conception. I'm not under any of the other risk factors.

tbh in that case if it was me and there was no sign of glucose in urine i would probably say thanks but no thanks. as long as there was no other warning sign

I'm probably going to discuss it with my midwife on Tuesday

Yep, have a chat with MW and explain your concerns.

I had mine due to booking in BMI, so effectively it has been precautionary? Sounds like it's the same for you.

My hospital also offer what is called a glucose challenge test, it's a mini GTT. You take the drink, fast for an hour and have your blood taken. If it shows anything then you need the full GTT. Maybe this is an option?

(All women get the glucose challenge test at my hospital at 28w appt but I had already been booked in for full on GTT)

I took my levithyroxine as normal before it. Any reason why you can't take yours as normal?

The letter said to take no medicines beforehand as it could affect the test.

When I had my daughter (She’s now 18 months) I took my usual meds as wasn’t advised not to and the lady just said it’s incase any of the medicines were sugar coated it could manipulate the result however she still took the test and everything came back fine so maybe if yours aren’t sugar coated it may be ok? Worth a double check

I`ve had this done in both of my pregnancys, If you are taking regular medication then i believe that you are still ok to still take this according to the leaflet i have in my maternity folder, Check with your midwife, If you need medication & you dont take it, It would most likely have a negative effect on the result anyway, You wouldnt be expected to make yourself ill X

i would personally go and I did.

Why take a risk when the test is not causing you harm?

just trying...

not taking my meds on time can cause me harm.

have you spoken to the professionals and do they have any advice for you?

I am sure they have something planned out for special circumstances without causing risks to either mother or baby? optimistically speaking anyway.

Spoke to my midwife. She said to call them with view to cancelling.
