I posted this in my journal, but figured I would post here too to see if I can get some answers.

Last Friday, I went to the doctors because I've been having these really sharp pains in my stomach that last 15-30 seconds. It has only occurred once or twice, but I wanted to know what it was. The pain is so bad that it will stop me in my tracks and if I had to guess, it felt like a horrible contraction. I've never had one, so I couldn't really say that is what it was, but it was painful. Then I would have a bowel movement after and when I looked in my underwear, it had looked like a I pee'd myself a little. I also told my doctor I've been having low back pain and my belly feels super heavy. He was concerned about the leakage and told me to go to the hospital and get a couple tests to make sure it wasn't amniotic fluid. So I went the hospital and went to labor and delivery. I got a test where they swab you to check the fluid and I also got an ultrasound. I was there for 3 hours! They hooked me up to the machine that tracks babies heartbeat and to see if I'm having contractions.

For three hours, I got to hear his heartbeat and it was nice and strong. He was moving a TON! The most he has ever moved. The swab came back clear and there was no amniotic fluid. Then the ultrasound person came in and I got to see my little bubba moving around. He was soooo big and there was no doubt he was a boy. haha. I swear he has the cutest butt ever! The ultrasound showed I had lots of fluid around him and everything was great. Just when I thought I was going to be discharged, the nurse told me I was having contractions and they were going to monitor me a bit more.

I was shocked to say the least. Contractions? What the heck does that mean?! I didn't even know I was having them! I didn't feel a thing! She told me it could be from an irritable uterus, or that it could be that I'm dehydrated or that I could be having gas pains. Eventually, I was released to go home and everything was fine, but they never really talked to me about the contractions I was having. I have a follow up with my doctor this Thursday so I'm going to ask him what that was about. The discharge paperwork said to take it easy and drink plenty of fluids. It also said if I experience any more painful cramps or leaking fluid, to come back.

It was really scary being in the hospital for 3 hours and wondering the whole time if my bubba is okay or not. I'm just glad he is, but I'm so confused about the contractions and why I was having them. My worst fear is pre-term labor and I hope I don't ever have to go through that.

Has anyone else had contractions this early or an irritable uterus? She said they weren't braxton hicks and that they were "real" contractions. How was I not feeling them then?

I have contractions multiple times a day. Braxton Hicks at this stage in the game are outrageously common. I’m certain if i were monitored right now they’d be like «*you’re in labor!*» i have so many contractions. If you’re not feeling them, they’re BH ones and harmless. Your uterus is just getting strong for labor. You’re almost in the third trimester, this is exactly what should be happening right now.

The sharp pains are round ligament pains. I have to breathe through them sometimes too, they’re unbearable. And also totally normal!

The nurse said it was not BH, it was real contractions, but they aren't labor inducing ones. I honestly don't think that nurse knew what she was talking about. She made me just worry more.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with those sharp pains! That makes sense. They are miserable though.

And now..my left leg and foot feel numb!! Ah!

If they’re contractions that aren’t labor-inducing, they’re BH. If they’re «*real*», then they’re labor-inducing by definition! They can’t be both. Yeah she sounds like she is clueless.

Well this is good to hear. I was worried all weekend long!!

Thanks for clearing it up <3
