I've suffered from IBS for the last 8 years or so, it's mostly under control through my diet. I know what sets me off so I try to avoid those things. It flares up every now and again but I can deal with it.

I was just wondering how pregnancy might effect it and whether any of you suffer from it?

i have suffered with it since my daughter was born nearly 3 years ago, i dont know what sets mine off so i just take each day as it comes some days i will be prefectly fine and others i will be suffering like hell and in angony. best thing i can do is trying to relax and sleep it off x x x

Pregnancy has made mine worse. I wasn't even aware I had mild IBS until I got pregnant and ended up in severe pain thinking I was having ectopic! Doc says its IBS and my trigger is fibre. Which is what I was taking loads of to avoid constipation! Have ordered some symprove to see if that will help

I've read that the change in hormones can make it worse?

Yeah my midwife did say that in some people their IBS can get a lot worse during pregnancy.... not good...

I've had IBS for over 20 years, pregnancy made the constipation worse and taking iron 3x daily because of pregnancy induced anaemia made pooping almost impossible. Lactulose helped greatly but I just resigned myself to it being worse. What I will say is that since my c section 13 days ago, my IBS pre pregnancy is 90% better, I'm not as bloated and I'm going to the loo daily, unheard of for me x

I have IBS and during the first 2 months of pregnancy it played havoc. It's been bad since i got married last december (through the stress) and just as it settled down I got pregnant and it got even worse. As we had been trying, I took a pregnancy test to see whether or not i could take my medication for it as the pain was that bad (as it's not indicated during pregnancy) - since then ive just had to take paracetamol, monitor it and ive got some lactulose on stand by in case the constipation gets too bad.
But IBS is a very 'individual' disease so it may effect you completely differently.

I've had IBS for 14 years now, which i can usually control fairly well through my diet. In both my first pregnancy and so far this one, it has been a problem in tri 1 but then completely disappears for the rest of my pregnancy! Unfortunately I remember it being really bad in the weeks after giving birth, so this time round I will be ready for it and have my Buscopan at the ready, lol!

Hi, I've only just seen this thread. I've had IBS for years and I've found in this pregnancy it's not been bad at all...in fact, I have the opposite of what I normally have at the moment, constipation! I have found once or twice that if the constipation goes on too long, I will get the opposite until it all clears out (sorry for tmi!). I just take everyday as it comes and try not to go overboard on fiber as that makes it worse, just try to have a constant moderate amount and to drink lots of water.
