Hi

I've finely had confirmation that I have Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) from blood tests that started back in Dec last year.

I was wondering if anyone on here suffers with it and how they cope or how it affects their fertility?

I'm feeling quite positive now as I've had my thyroxine medication increased and although its sent my last few cycles wappy and may have had an affect on my fertility, at least I know something can be done about it.

I might be one step closer to that BFP now
 :D

I guess no one elses suffers with this, never mind!

 Hi I do not suffer from underactive thyrod that I know of I need to go back to the doctor as I am on cd 129 and all the last lot of blood tests came back ok. I just wanted to say that I hope you get your bfp soon and that I am pleased that you have some answers now. Have you asked the ladies in the TTC with fertility issues as someone over there might have Hypothyroidism.

Hi

I was just wondering how you came to be diagnosed, what sort of symptoms/medical history led to you having the tests? Its just because I work in a hospital and someone said to me I seem to have some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism, also my mum and great gran have had it.

From what I have read where fertility is concerned I think it can cause a short luteal phase which can mess up your chances of conceiving somewhat, and also can cause miscarriage but I dont know why I read that was, just googled it. (I have had 2 mc so this also makes me wonder). I think with proper treatment though these sorts of things are correctable, I am no expert mind you!

I'm the opposite to you - i have an overactive thyroid. My specialist thinks i have a tumour (not cancerous) on my pituitary gland so i am due to go for a CAT scan and possible op which is scary as the gland sits at the base of the brain
I am told that an overactive thyroid causes miscarriages whereas an underacive thyroid can make conceiving difficult. I also have trouble conceiving but i think that is more down to my endo problem.
I was diagnosed 3 years ago and have been off and on meds every 6 months due to the gland malfunctioning and then stabilizing. Symptoms are awful though - erratic heartbeat and severe palpitations, insomnia, drastic weightloss (but meds fattened me back up  ) but i think the worst symptom of all is the excessive worrying and not able to slow my mind down. I literally shake/tremble with worry and when the gland is malfunctioning i become neurotic (to the extent where i was put under psychiaric care - but this was before my diagnosis).
For such an amazingly small gland it can really screw up your body and mind.
If you want to chat anytime pm me

I just want to add Marge that if you still don't get your BFP when your body has settled with thyroxine then you should ask to be referred to a fertility clinic. My GP referred me before a year of TTCing because thyroid can play havoc with fertility. Good luck

Bloody hell Notty!! I didnt know all that about the tumour on the pituitary gland!   Bless you, you really do have a hard time of it dont you

Story of my life :rotfl:
I think sometimes God punishes me for not believing in him

Hi

A&J - thanks for the tip I will pop in there and ask! I raeely hope your cycle gets sorted out soon

Jen79 - I came to be diagnosed just because I went for an initial blood
test cause I kept getting thrush every month and it was really getting me down, this was last dec and its taken now for the doc to say its Hypothyroidism. I had repeat blood tests in feb for them to check my TSH level and when they came back they started me on 25mcg Thyroxine as they were still high, after a blood test last week I'm now on 50mcg and now its been properly confirmed, just have to get the thyroxine level right.
Its only now when I look into it that I have had a few symptoms for a while now. Feeling the cold, unknown weight gain, dry skin, very tired even though I sleep for england!
I would defo get it checked out as it can be hereditary.
Good luck!

Notty - god you have been through it! The more I'm looking into it the more I'm worrying that it will now take me even longer to conceive! Its strange cause your symptoms sound the opposite of mine  . It sounds terrible what you have been through  . Before all this happened I was going to go back to the docs in July cause then it would have been 1 year TTC but my DH upset me last night though cause he said that they will have to wait until my thyroid settles down before they will refer me for fertility tests etc, so this may go way beyond July. What do you think?

Thanks for the replies, I feel slightly better knowing that I have a few answers :D

Hey I have only just seen this sorry!!
I have an underactive thyroid! I was diagnosed nearly 8 years ago!
Although it can affect your fertility, it didnt affect mine! Iam very lucky!!

How are you feeling? OK? Although my levels say Im ok, I never feel right! Im always tired and continue all the symptoms lol Im on 150mcg at the mo!
I hope your not like this! My doc says that once you start your thyroxine, your body should adjust back to that of a person without it so we have no idea why I feel crap all the time haha

Thats great that it didnt affect your fertility and I can see you have gorgeous kids! Bummer that your still feeling crappy, will they increase your meds?

I'm feeling ok, well other than being tired most days and cold most of the time!! I've just been increased to 50mcg of Levothyroxine which I hope starts working soon, the 25mcg previous was starting to give me a bit more energy so I'm expecting better things from 50mcg.

I have been told by someone on FF that you need a TSH level of about 1 to get pg and sustain a pregnancy, mine when they first tested was 6.75 and now its 5.5 last week so no wonder I havent got pg yet!

Im glad the tablets seem to be helping!! :D
They never gave me energy so that is a great sign that you will be feeling back to normal soon!! :D
TBH I have never asked them for my numbers? I never really needed to for anything? I guess if it would have taken me a while to get pg then I would have?
I hope things get level soon for you!! Odd though that I feel the symptoms still yet if that is the case, my levels must be always ok? I guess Im just unlucky with the symptoms and lucky with it not affecting my fertility!! :D
I wish you luck in both!!

Thanks Lea m

I'm keeping it all crossed that I'll feel better soon and also get my BFP soon too!

I hope your tiredness gets better soon :D
