Baby is exceptionally strong, quick and determined and every time I put him on his back to change him, he immediately rolls onto his front.

Even with two people trying to help (e.g. holding him/distracting him etc) changing has rapidly degenerated into a battle (where baby wins). This morning I had to put his nappy on while he sat on my knee.

I don't know how it's going to work when we have a dirty nappy?!

And in a fortnight or so, I won't have anyone to help me change him either.

Any advice/suggestions please, I'm desperate!

Hey tinsel, sorry I don't really have much advice but just wanted to let you know we are same, he is happier on my knee to a certain point, but on the mat is a disaster, I try and give him something to hold or distract him to no succes. So will be stalking this to see what everybody else comes up with too. At the moment I just change him on my knee like you said, but that can come with its own problems haha.
Hope you get the answer your looking for, sorry I've not been much help. Xxx

I use speed, distraction and a little force.

So I make my changes quickly, I give Bee something I know she likes (usually something she isn't allowed, like her nail clippers) and when she gets wriggly I gently pin her down.... sounds very rough but it's not.

Otherwise I do the opposite and get dirty nappy off, clean her and let her have a wonder around then 5 minutes later I put clean nappy on.

If I'm changing a wet nappy when he is unhappy (which I avoid doing if I can) I let him stand up at the nursing chair with a book.on the chair. I otherwise still use his changing station to save my back and he has a whine when I lay him down but I smother him in kisses and hand him the sudocrem pot or similar and he's generally distracted for long enough. We also have a felt bug mobile hanging in the alcove where his changing station is and I ask him to show me the buzzy bee or the butterfly then spin it. Its worked.for 9 months so far lol.

I ended up changing my boy standing up, but that was from about 18 months. Could you give him a drink or something and be super quick?

Ditto the above mummies. I usually hand him the clean nappy or he lays with the wipes. Unfortunately we have to gently pin him down and distract him. He usually gets distracted by everything around him, however on the changing table in his room he's absolutely fine

My little girl is constantly rolling away during nappy changes! I try to give her a toy to play with which usually works!

The distraction techniques (toys, flashing lights, me singing or playing games with him) are rapidly wearing thin & he's trying to flip before I even put him down on the mat! He can stand holding on to something but not free-stand.

I'm not sure how I could change him while holding him either as even two hands isn't enough to contain him, but any techniques appreciated!

I haven't changed a nappy lead down since he could stand up !! He would just refuse to let me. I work in care and change pads on children with disabilities so changing him stood up wee or poo was easier :) xx

If you lay him on a pillow so head is slightly raised and maybe a cheeky chocolate button???? Maybe only for very messy nappy changes that you need him to lay still for, wet nappys I'd do just standing up. Can always get the pull up ones if it makes it easier although I think more expensive. Otherwise distraction with anything he will hold. My lo loves to watch the videos I take of him on my phone so will happily lay still if he is looking at himself!!

I used to put the telly on to distract my eldest when he was difficult during nappy changes.

Hmm, maybe a mobile phone or tv controller might do the trick.. at least for for a couple of changes!

Thanks for the suggestions. As per littlemonkey, I think I may need to get a TV in the new place and put it on every time I need to change him! That's the only way I've managed to cut his fingernails since he stopped feeding to sleep during daylight hours..

I've always done nappy changes in the living room. CBA walking up and down stairs every time a bum needs changing, especially with two in nappies now!

I still have to cut my toddlers toe nails while he's asleep. Telly never worked for that!!

try singing..... singing can stop all kinds of things and distracts babies more than just talking...
