How do I find out what treatment is available from my local hospital?

I've got 20 days til my follow up appointment where we will find out the results of all tests done so far and to find out what will be next for us.

I'm going over things in my head, trying to view all potential scenarios of what they might say so further tests, Clomid or Metformin etc but what happens if DH's semen results aren't very good?

I'm not too worried as I know his ex managed to fall pregnant several times but unfortunately none of them were successful (hence DH's hesitation to go for tests with me as it was very painful for him with ex) but he is terrified and keeps saying that his results were good last time he had tests but of course, that was a few years ago and I guess he's worried that they won't be as good now.

I've researched our private hospital and it's over £9000 for IVF without the additional costs (can't remember what they were for now) which bumped the total up to around £11,000. I'm not sure we could afford that. :(

I'm just trying to prepare myself for whatever might happen so I at least know what's available and whether it costs.

I read that we could find the PCT and use that to see what's available on the NHS but so far, I'm finding nothing except that if you've been referred to a specialist by a GP then the NHS will pay for everything.

Also, will our age play a factor in anything? I'm 22 and DH is 34.

Any ideas?

as long as neither of you has any children, neither of you smoke and your BMI is in the healthy range (not sure about him) they will need to offer you treatment. It's up to them what they offer when - and they'll offer the easiest things (ovulation induction etc) if it's appropriate first before moving up to more complex stuff if that doesn't work. If they don't find anything wrong they may decide to ask you to wait a little longer before starting treatment.

I can't remember what tests you've had done so far...but they may continue with a few more of those.

Vicky - PMed you hun. x

Scotch - I've had lots of bloods, scans, HSG and DH has had a semen sample. So we've not really had much done so to be honest I'm expecting more tests really. I know it's jumping the gun a bit but I like to be informed of what could happen.

i thought you'd had quite a lot

i really don't know then hon as ours was so cut and dried...

The other thing is, my consultant only mentioned Metformin as a possible treatment as he suspected I had PCOS but so far, it's not been confirmed on any of my tests, my bloods always come back normal (odd considering my OPKs always had strong lines, even every day throughout a 70 odd day cycle) and there was nothing abnormal on my scans and I've had a few of them. My HSG was clear too. So I assume I'll be having more tests done.

Now that you have had all the tests done they should definitely start you on some type of treatment plan, I would guess being polycystic it would be met and clomid to start with xx

I suppose it'd also depend on DH's semen results?

I hope the 20 days will fly by missJ! I guess it will depend on your DH's results - if they're fine they might start you with clomid? Hope you're having a nice easter, not seen you around for a while xxx

i cant add anything else apart from good luck, 2 weeks and 6 days will be here before you know it!

Thanks girls, am starting to get a bit nervous really. Just praying DH's results will be ok. I've got to make a GP's appointment before I go cos I need a sample pot for my next appointment as they want a sample of urine plus I've got a rash that's come up on the side of my neck and has spread over my cheek, chin and back of my neck.

Just wondering, could I sneakily access the semen results at the GP? It'd be a weight off my mind if my GP could tell me the results.

Think only hubby can get results.

The readings are done immediately. The delay is the time it takes to process and send to gp. He might be able to phone up and see if they're back though.

Really? To be honest, I think he'd rather wait til we see the consultant, I know he's terrified there's something wrong so I reckon he'd rather put it off til the appointment.

The suspense is killing me. Our GP hasn't called, when I asked for the results of my bloods, she refused at first, saying that as we were being seen at the hospital, it was for them to tell me the results but she gave in after a while and told me they were all fine. Unless she lied to shut me up. :eh:

Hubby had to call our GP for results - wasn't gonna wait a month till my next gyno appointment lol. But yeah ya hubby can phone gp for the results I think 3 days to a week after he did the test.

I'll chat to him tonight and see if he'd rather find out before our appointment but I think I already know what the answer will be. :oooo:

I bit the bullet and spoke to DH last night, asked if he wanted to call the GP and find out his results, even if they just say that they're fine, at least we'd know. But he said no and that if the GP said there's a problem, he'd want to hear it from the consultant who would (in his words) explain it more in depth and then talk about what we could do to improve it etc.

I can see where he's coming from and I knew he wouldn't budge. I know that he's just scared, more than anything so he's putting it off for as long as he can. I tried to reassure him last night but he changed the subject.

I really, really hope to God that everything's ok with his swimmers.

Hi hun, as you know I was in a similar sitiation -tests were normal etc. As I was explained, next step is Clomid (given swimmers are fine). I dont see a point in Metformin although it can help, it did nothing for me (I wasnt overweight).
How are your cycles?
Hope times flies by and the appointment comes in no time

sent from my Galaxy s2

Thanks hun. :)

My cycles are still erratic, after my HSG I bled every two weeks - happened 3 times I think. Had one v. heavy AF since then so am on CD19 today. My consultant thinks I should lose weight and he said on our first appointment he suspects PCOS but so far, none of my tests have confirmed this so unsure what will be next for me if he still thinks I've got PCOS.

Just over 2 weeks til I find out I suppose!
