I was wondering if the hospital is offering you anything? Like a hospital sleeping thing (you know, with an open back) pillows and that kind of stuff? I know they do give you this in Holland, but Im not sure whether or not they give you ANYTHING at all here? Any hospital shoes or..I don't know?

Also..Do I HAVE to state in my birth plan that I do not wish to eat my placenta because otherwise they might put it in a smoothie or lasagna?
Since it's so popular to eat your placenta in the UK nowadays..And I don't really fancy a bit tbh

they don't give you anything here (mid-kent) they even advised me to take my own pillow in so i'd be able to have one... or two if I was lucky! and you don't have to put anything about the placenta in your birth plan, unless you want to keep it! good luck xx

I am not planning on keeping it either..I don't even want to see it really. And okay, they havent tell me anything about bringing my own pillows yet though! But thanks anyway (:

You might want to take your own sleeping gown, much more comfy.
And slippers too.
And i giggled about the placenta, the only decision you have to make is whether you want an injection to manage 3rd stage

Tapatalking so cant see signatures

I took own clothes toiletries etc and no u dont have to eat placenta lol

sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 excuse my terrible spelling :P

Is eating the placenta popular here!? I've certainly never heard of anyone doing it!

There was this news article that a lot of women in the UK would love a placenta smoothie :P Its weird because all the good vitamins etc are gone after 40 weeks so why would you even bother :P I showed my mw my birth plan (including the placenta bit) and she had to laugh about it. She then said some ladies would like to eat it but she completely understand that I dont want to see or eat it :P

LOL it actually made me laugh out loud when I read it. I remember reading an article about having it put into capsules, like a pill to take. It would be interesting to see if any ladies are considering eating it.I'm trying to imagine my mw face as they are clearing up, " do you mind, I wanted to eat that!!"

They say it helps with breastmilk and against the baby blues, but I wonder WHY it helps since all the good things are out off it after 40 weeks :D

Moaning about horse, but placenta in lasagna is fine..Hmm lovely.

You're lucky to get any food on the NHS let alone them having the funds to blend up your placenta and cook you a lasagne to put it in

I didn't need to take a pillow but I took a few night shirts, a dressing gown and some clothes for afterwards

xxx

You definitely need clothes but if your hospital is like mine, prepare to be hot! Dd was born in Feb. It was freezing and the maternity ward was like the tropics. I couldn't even sleep with the sheet on.

I took flip flops last time to use in the shower and I preferred them for wearing to slippers cos my feet got air!

This time I'm taking shorts and vest style pjs. Flip flops. A fan. Leaving the dressing gown at home. Taking a towel cos theirs are too small.

At the ante-natal classes they said you can bring your own pillow if you want because the hospital ones aren't nice. They provide towels but you have to bring pretty much everything else and that you can bring your own clothes but gave warnings about how they might vanish into the hospital laundry, so I guess don't take anything you'd be sorry to lose?

Ahh okay :) I was also wondering, because of my BMI (28 before pregnancy) I am NOT allowed to give birth at home, but what if the baby just decides to come and we dont have enough time to get into the hospital?

Is this your first baby? If so although not impossible, it's unlikely you won't make it to hospital in time. How far from hospital are you?

18 miles away from the nearest hospital (first baby by the way)

You should be alright. Most people worry about going in too early and then being sent home! I know I did :-) I stayed at home for as long as I could for fear of being told I wasn't 5cm yet. Got to hospital and was 8cm...but it still took another 7 hours to give birth.

Some women take their placenta home and put a fruit tree on top in the garden which I think is a nice idea :)

The drying is called placental encapsulation, they dry it out and put it in capsules.

The placenta is full of nutrients, it's grown a baby for 9 months. A lot of these theories are old wives tails, but science is looking into it.

Also, it's supposed to be good for post partum haemorrhage. But you only need to touch a piece on your lip or swallow a small piece. Who knows if it works?

As for clothes etc, I'd take things in that you know will make you feel more comfortable.
Post natal wards are busy places. If you have home comforts with you, it can make your stay a lot nicer.

Very unlikely to get a birth too quick to make it to hospital labour usually lasts several hours.initial and early then established labour then baby arrives. Most UK people would not want to eat the placenta I certaintly do not want it near me I would have liked to do cord blood donation but my hospital doesn't offer it sadly. Also at hospital you get pain relief and drugs I would ring your mw and see if you can attend the Nhs free antenatal classes and to do a hospital tour to dispell your fears xx

Years ago hospitals used to give placentas to the cosmetics industries to make face creams. This is before HIV etc.
