So doing the routine things at the hospital yesterday, was weighed and all that lot, so the MW did a chart of the weight i should (or shouldn't) gain, I've always been a big girl, was 18 and half stone at my heaviest!! & I'm only 5ft4!

So the MW blatantly was telling me I'm too fat (not like i don't know this) and fall in the 'high risk' category, but most first time pregnancies do, so i'm not worried about being high risk. I'm to have Glucose tests & extra scans to check on growth (i don't see why) :/.

My BMI is really high, like 42, so yeah I was wondering if there's any real cause for concern because i'm a 'larger' lady, and if any other big girls have had any problems with being pregnant or giving birth because of their size?

Would love to know :) thanks all x

I think that you might be at a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes, which they will be checking for anyway. If you do develop that you may have a much larger than average baby. There are things they can do to stop that happening so don't panic.
My BMI is about 31 and I am supposedly at a higher risk as well. I saw an article on Yahoo yesterday of a woman in the states who gave birth to a 16 pound baby due to gestational diabetes that got out of control.
I know its irritating when midwifes start going on about BMI but I have to keep reminding myself that they are paid to make sure mum and baby are safe.

i have a high bmi and my gp said the problem ususally lies conceiving and theres no reason for anything but a perfectly healthy pregnancy (i didnt but it had nothing to do with my weight - whole other story haha)

tbh extra checks etc are brill so enjoy them lol !! :) good luck with ur preg!! :) xxx

my bmi is over 30 and so i am also classed as high risk......i'm just going to try and make sure i eat healthy throughout and try my best to keep up some gentle exercise....try and give myself the best chance when labour comes!! xx

thanks v much!! im doing slimming world and ttc atm , im sticking at slimming world because if i do get preg i can keep following the diet and maintain/lose healthily while preg :) xxx

I had high BMI in my last pregnancy (and this one) and it did make life difficult carrying around that extra weight, make sure you walk ALOT and keep yourself limber and moving, i ended up with a blood clot in my leg because i found it so hard to get around towards the end... This time i still have a high BMI but i am being much, much more careful

Breastfeeding is a great way to loose weight after the baby is born ;)

my BMI is 34 and they've put me as low risk, everything normal except i've got to have the extra test at 28 weeks, no idea why mines different :\ xx

I have a high bmi and I did with dd. I had no extra care with Dd and she was born 36week weighing 6lb 10oz. This time I'm consultant led due to bmi and having a pre-term before but nothing else is different.
I was on slimming world but due to sickness had to stop as I couldn't eat I'm planning on going back once 12 week scan out the way (10 week today)
X

you may have a risk of having a large baby chick, which may lead to complications at birth x

it is totally fictional that big girls have big babies, its an old myth, ur baby gets what it needs from the placenta, its just tougher to carry the extra weight being bigger is all xx

Bigger ladies don't automatically have bigger babies, but it is possible they will have a bigger baby if they develop gestational diabetes. And one of the risk factors for getting it is having a higher BMI.
