Well the title says it all! Struggled with breast feeding at the start but getting the swing of it now. Thought we were doing really well but at her day 10 weigh in she still has lost 5%. The midwife is happy with her isn't concerned at all but I am. (My first took over 4 weeks to regain and in the end that was on bottles)

My question is this, she feeds well during the day- about 7 good feeds but fusses a lot at the breast at night. Could this be because of low supply and should I introduce a bottle at night? We already top up via a syringe if the feed is not good.

Lots and lots of nappies so I know she is getting enough during the day? Will a bottle really hurt my breast feeding attempt?

What do you mean by fussing hun? My LO used to feed once per hour in the night when first born, if not more. It's the time when your prolactin levels are highest so best for establishing supply. If LO is getting nice wet and dirty nappies I would stick it out. You always have the ten-day weigh in to let you know, it is extremely common that they lose weight in the first few days.

I know it is stressful and worrying though, big hugs hun and good luck xx

Hi, don't know how old your lo is now as cannot see tickers but it took me 4 weeks of my lo messing around at the breast (all day and all night) until one day it just clicked and now he feeds in about 10-15 minutes per feed. Hang in there, it will get better. If you're getting through plenty of nappies you are doing fine. In my opinion - Don't express, I did this and stressed myself out that much because I was either feeding or expressing. I know it's hard work at the time but it takes time to build your supply up xxx

Just realised I read the OP wrong sorry -my OH is distracting me pointing out cars while we drive (as if I care?)

There will be another weigh in in a few days if memory serves - if your mw is not concerned I wouldn't be either. Have you had latch checked? Xx

Yes, latch has been checked. An overly sensitive I think because of what happened with my first. And by fussing I mean latching on fir a few sucks, then off, then a bit of grizzling, then on again then falling asleep etc!
And yes, tried to express more but limit it to 20 mins after first feed on the morning. Can't do much more than that with a toddler running around!! Get 5 oz then so enough for any top ups or disastrous feeds.

babies almost always lose weight at the first weigh in, id keep going as is and not worry about it for a week or two yet. fussing is normal the first few weeks til you both know what your doing better

My LO lost 8% of his birth weight by day 10 but has gained nicely ever since. The fussing in the evenings sounds exactly like my LO and he even does that occasionally now. Stick with it if you can as its definitely worth it!

My boy lost 9.9% in 4 days, and he gained it back fine.

Weight loss is totally normal, keep perservering hun xx
