Well i think i have finally finished my birth story, it has taken me several days to write this up, been adding to it everyday.
So where to start with my birth of little Roo. After having troubles getting hold of my midwife all week with no luck, Thursday came and I was a little down. Decided to go to my aqua natal class in the morning to try and see if I could get things started naturally at 10 days over. Felt a little uncomfortable in the afternoon and had mild pains really irregular up until about 5pm.
From 5pm til 6pm I sat on the phone to my sister where I was getting pains every 5-6mins lasting 30-40 seconds, they were like mild period pains. Being that my sister was two hours away we decided to get her to travel down as it looked like labour was starting. The pains continued right up until 10:30pm where they started to get further apart, by 11:45pm they had all but stopped!
We all decided to would be good to get some sleep just incase things started of in the early hours again. But at midnight I had this awful pain followed by what felt like a massive punch down low. Thought it was just baby protesting then another pain came, rather quickly since the last one. It was only when I tried to roll out of bed I felt my waters leaking and woke hubby up to grab me a towel so I could run to the bathroom.
We collected up all our bits into the car and headed for the hospital. We probably got there around 12:30ish and shown to our room, which was huge!! By 1:30pm the mw had asked all her questions and wanted to confirm that my waters had gone, I stood up from the chair and lots leaked out! She said oh yeah that is definitely ur waters lol got examined at was at 3cm, and then strapped up to the monitor. The contractions were really really painful and I was already wanting an epidural to get rid of the pain. I remember wriggling around on the bed and the machine lost the heartbeat so I was told to stay as still as I could.
The next hour and a half went in such a blur and after a couple more decelerations of Roo's heartbeat on the monitor the mw decided a clip on baby's head would be better as me moving around wouldn't affect the reading. I remember panicking
every time his heartbeat dropped, and dh kept saying all was fine, if the mw was worried they would do something. At one point I remember the mw moaning at DH and my sister as I had rolled onto my side and the machine couldn't pick up his heartbeat and they hadn't said anything. During the clip being put on I was finally given gas and air, it didn't take away the pain but it helped me concentrate on something as it felt as though there was no break in the pain. The pain I was still getting even though I wasn't contracting was immense!! After the clip was fitted I asked if I had gotten any further and she said I was about 5cm now.
Even with the clip on they were still getting drops on his heartbeat, so I ended up having the mw playing around with the clip loads. Next thing I remember is there were several people in the room including a male doctor. He examined me and my god he was rough, I don't think the gas and air was being taken out of my mouth at this point. Next it was the gas and air was being disconnected and I was being wheeled out of the room, and I heard the words caesarean and general anaesthetic. I found out after in recovery that Roo's heartbeat had been at 50bpm for 4-5 mins when they rushed me off. Also his placenta showed signs of distress through lack of oxygen.
Once in the theatre at about 3am I started getting more aware of what was happening as I was no longer allowed gas and air. Luckily within a few minutes I was told that Roo's heartbeat was back up to 120bpm. After some more monitoring I was then offered to go back to the labour ward and continue as I was 7cm and they expected baby would be there within 3 hours or I could go ahead with a c section. After being told that they couldn't be sure that baby's heartbeat wouldn't drop again, I decided to have the section.
My sister came into the theatre with me as my DH is very squeamish and decided it would be best to not have him faint on the floor. After a few minutes of them poking and prodding my belly we heard Roo's first cry!
Then this tiny white crying bundle was shown to us before being taken away to be cleaned. Once wrapped up in a towel he was placed on my chest while I was stitched up. I kept asking if my DH knew he had been born and could someone take him to see his daddy. DH came into the back of the room to see baby in his crib while I had the last bit of stitching and then we were off to recovery.
Baby Harry was born 11 days late on 6/7/12 at 3:43am weighing 7lbs 1oz. Just over 3 hours after arriving at the hospital.
It had been the most traumatic time ever for us and I still have flash backs and loads of tears when I think about what happened. I really don't know what I would've done of they were unable to get baby's heartbeat back up or we weren't being monitored in the first place. I know I shouldn't dwell on things and I hope that in time I will accept the way things went and just be grateful that we are both safe and sound.
I am slowly getting to grips with motherhood and recovering from the section. It has certainly been a shock to the system, although I would do anything for my lil man and I love him so so much and can't imagine life without him.
