Harry Colin Davis, Born at 41+6 on 2nd March 2013 at 1.50am, weighing 6lb1oz
I went into hospital at 5pm to be booked in for my induction. I was shown to my bed and left to settle until 5.45pm when a Midwife came and did an internal and inserted 1mg of Prostin gel and explained that it doesn't always work with the first dose and I may be waiting for a long while and said i'd need another lot in 6hrs if nothing was happening. Based on Jack's 42hr labour I wasn't hopeful. After 45mins of sitting on the trace machine we were allowed to go for a walk so went to the vending machine for a drink. As I was walking I had so much pressure in my bum I had to walk on tip toes or I swear my arse would have fallen out! lol I didn't mention anything because I thought 'nah nothing can happen this quickly' and got back in bed. About an hour later I could feel teeny tiny niggles and said to Steve it must be all in my head because I so badly wanted Harry out. By the time Steve left at 9.30pm there were definate niggles but they were nothing major so I sat staring at the walls for a while. Within half an hour of Steve going I had quite uncomfy tightenings coming every minute and lasting 20 secs but because I assumed they needed to be longer I sat there quietly. Then they suddenly got worse so I called a Midwife and she said 'thats very close together shall I check you'. She checked me and I was 4-5cms dialated so I had to call Steve to come back and got wheeled round to delivery. Steve arrived 5mins later by which time I had started really contracting and was moaning during them. I was checked again and was 7cms (in the space of 30mins!) and then the contractions really kicked off every minute lasting 30-40secs. I was begging for an epidural and Steve was really worried about me so they wheeled me into another room and put a gown on me ready for an epidural but decided to do another check because I was grunting and shouting about the pressure. I was 10cms (7cms 20mins earlier) so there was no time for an epidural. All of a sudden the contraction pains stopped and the urge to push was so bad they told me to go for it. I was still panicking and shouting for an epidural even though they'd told me there wasn't time. I then decided I couldn't do it which made them all laugh lol. I started pushing at 1am and Harry popped into the world at 1.50am screaming his teeny head of and covered from head to toe in thick waxy vernix!! It looked like he'd been dipped in moisturiser!!! He had absolutley no blood on him. The Midwife was really shocked about the vernix because preemie's usually have it still but not as much as Harry had. Daddy cut his cord which he loved because he couldn't cut Jack's. He was then weighed while I had the injection and delivered the placenta which made me shakey but it was delivered within 5mins. I had some tea and toast within 20mins of giving birth and had showered and walked myself round to maternity an hour after delivering!! I had absolutly no pain relief what so ever for the birth! I had 2 paracetamol and a codeine afterwards because I was stinging alot but escaped with the tiniest graze.
I honestly do not know how I managed a natural birth, I was absolutly petrified because i'm a complete wimp but i'm so proud I did it! Labour was written on my notes as 3hrs 38mins!!
Harry had a few feeding issues in hospital because he wasn't 'squeezed' on the way out and was full of mucus which he's almost bought up now and is taking an ounce every 2hrs. He's a very cuddly baby and loves to be on my chest. He is the double of Jack but has blond hair already and less than Jack had. He failed his hearing test in his right ear but the lady said he has such tiny ear canals that she couldn't get the ear plug in so he has to go for a detailed hearing test in a couple of weeks but she's not concerned and thinks he'll pass. He also has a very slight clicky left hip and given that my Mum has a deformed hip and arthritus and my Brother has dodgy hips he has to have the hip scanned in a few weeks but again she thinks it's nothing to worry about it's just precaution. All in all it was an amazing experience on the 1st anniversary of my Grandad's death in the same hospital!! I think he was watching down on me and my Mini Man! xxx
