Last night DH and I went out to a dinner to celebrate my FIL's 60th birthday, and it ended up as a complete mess!
To start the evening off, when I got home from work my DH mentioned that my fish that I've had for 10 years had died. I know, it's only a fish! But I've had that sucker for 10 years and so I had a bit of a cry over that.
Then came the dinner. There were about 35 people in attendance, and some family had driven from about 2 hours away to attend. I was thinking we would be sitting with them, but instead this annoying couple swooped us up right away to say we were sitting with them and their son. Now, I don't like the father as is. He tends to be at a lot of the get-togethers, and by the end of the night I just want to punch him! Throw in his son and it was 10x worse. The apple didn't fall far from the tree on that one...
So yeah, we're all sitting around, and first the son asked what names we had been thinking of for little bean. I mentioned Jacob, Matthew and Mason. "What are you going for, biblical names or something?! Those names are only around because our parents forced them on us." He went on and on about how horrible the names are pretty much. After a few minutes of that, I finally told him that *I* actually really like the names, and he better watch what he says when dealing with a pregnant hormonal woman.
Then a little bit later, dinner is being served and two of us (myself included) get special plates because we don't eat pork. The other lady is allergic, mine is for religious reasons. So instead of just letting them put our food down in peace, the son starts in AGAIN........."What?! You don't eat pork??? I can't remember what came after that, but I decided I would just ignore him the remainder of the night.
Throughout dinner a few more jabs had been tossed my way, but then the duo started making fun of my DH's glasses. In my mind, it's all fine and dandy for me to take shit, but when they started taunting DH that was just the end of it for me. I just shouted "OH MY GOOOOOOD", and told my DH i needed to get air and stormed outside.
As soon as I got outside I started crying, and decided to go walk around the block. DH finally caught up with me at some point and ended up taking me home. :/
I've decided that I am not going to make a point to not attend parties or gatherings when the father/son combo will be present. This was the final straw for me.
Overall, the night just sucked. Here I thought we'd be going to a nice dinner, so I got dressed up as nicely as I could, only to be taunted and annoyed all night and then finally running away in tears. I do feel slightly bad as I didn't even get to talk to his parents or family who were visiting, but I think we're going to try and have dinner with them tonight to make up for it.
Aaaarg!
