Growth scan and GTT, any reassurance?

Hi girls,

Currently 32 + 4 weeks, had a midwife appointment this morning and bump measuring a little bit above the 90th centile.
My urine sample this morning came back completely clear from glucose but because I have been very thirsty and mentioned this to the midwife, she has referred me for a growth scan on Monday.
She did say they will likely do a GTT as well. Trying not to get too concerned as I dont have any other symptoms of gestational diabetes apart from being more thirsty. I have been quite bad at drinking more fizzy drinks (I would never have touched them prior to being pregnant!) and eating more sugary crap over Christmas. I am glad they are being cautious and testing me for GD but obviously a little bit concerned too.

Also the midwife who has measured me the last two times seems to measure a bit lower (practically near my vagina) than the first one who did it, so I am hoping the measurements are a bit off as well.
If anything it will be a nice chance to get to see baby on the scan again.

Does anyone has any advice on anything similar or reassurance? xx

HI L&P,

I'm similar, bump measuring big, midwife says if still big at next appointment she is going to send me for a scan, I've already have the GTT which came back normal and blood/urine fine so they aren't concerned.

As my son was 10lbs I'm not surprised my bump is big really but the current plan is if growth stays the same they will induce @ 38 weeks to avoid difficult delivered as I declined an elective section.

Think it's all just precautionary, I remember with my first I had different midwives and line was all over the place, this time have the same oine each time so bit more consistent.

As you say lovely to see the baby again let us know how it goes xx

I wouldn’t worry about it.

I had the same. But I had it after having a scan and them plotting actual measurements of the baby on the chart. Best they are looking after you and if you have it you get a diagnosis and treatment plan. Though chances are, if just from fundal height measurement it won’t be very accurate and probably the risk of having it is quite low. Especially if you didn’t have any risk factors before hand.

I had the same with DS and he was born at 7lb 9oz. Out of curiosity how tall are you? Im 4foot 11inches. So bump never had anywhere to go except out. Im fully expecting the same this time too

I’m 33+1 and at my appointment last week I was measuring big, 95th centile. I had a GTT a few weeks ago, because my last baby was 10lb12 and 98th centile so just precautionary. The results were negative. All the way through my last pregnancy though nothing was mentioned about me measuring big, they thought he’d be 8lb ish so I don’t have much faith in the tape measure! I would love a growth scan, just to see how big she’s looking but as I’ve agreed to an elective section I’m not being offered one. I hope all goes well at the scan, will be keeping an eye out for updates xx

I'm the other side of the coin here.

Never measured big, growth scans all showing baby is mid range (50th centile or less for all her measurements) yet I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes at 29w.

I was booked in for GTT due to slightly high BMI when I had booking appointment. Nothing in this pregnancy / to do with baby indicated GD.

I'm sure you don't have it but worse case scenario, it's not the end of the world. I'm being very well looked after!!! Yes I'm medicated and of course I would rather not have it but it's not really affected pregnancy as such?

X

Thanks so much everyone for your replies and my mind has been put at ease.
The midwide text me later to say they will onky do the GTT if baby measurements from the scan are on the big side and it would be more to rule it out.
Im 5ft 6in and hubby is well over 6ft so its likely to be a long baby if anything.
It wouldnt be the worst thing to have GD and would just mean I wouldnt get to labour or give birth in the home from home unit at the hospital which is midwife led and a lot more modern and private than the other section.
The main thing is baby and myself being looked after and healthy. Ive since made a cautious effort to avoid sugary snacks anyway.
Will keep updated how scan goes on Monday afternoon.x

Have you had a scan? One of the main signs of GD is excess fluid around babe this late on, which is how mine was spotted. No other signs at all I felt really good!

Hi ladies Im just home from the hospital.
Well baby is measuring perfectly normal and within range for 33 weeks. Not even looking like a big bruiser (yet lol). Fluid perfectly normal too. So they didnt do GTT,so relieved.
They estimated baby to be about 5lbs and by full term average of 8lbs or so. They said if I measure above at my next appointment (3 weeks time) they will scan again but its all just precautionary. Really feel happy and well looked after.
The Dr just said bumps can come in all shapes and sizes. I told her about the midwife measuring lower down the last two times than the previous midwife measurements and she said a couple of cm can make all the difference.

So no GD but Im still going to make an effort to lay off the sugary stuff and attempt healthier eating.

Thanks for conmenting xox
