Fuming

This has been going on for ages a hospital near where I used to live stopped for a while. I can understand it tho.

We didn't want to know, but that was our choice, it's unfair to impose it on families.

Have heard of it being hospital policy not to tell families of some racial backgrounds due to fears over the health of baby if it is not the desired sex, but i feel that even this is wrong.

As the article says, some won't tell whatever the circumstances, but i feel it should be down to what the family wants, not what pencil pushers in fancy suits decide is best for us.

I think its wrong, i can understand why in a way but still another way for the nanny state to dictate our lives!!

I mean come on i would give anything to have a little boy but if this ones a girl i will love it the same no matter what!! Wouldnt choose to terminate cos its not a boy!!! x

Several hospitals near us have stopped this, I can understand it really, a woman I know (who was a white Catholic by the way) said that if she had been told her oldest was a boy she would have terminated because she wanted a girl :(. It's not just religious/social implications it's sometimes parental preference in all races

I think so but who's to say someone couldn't make it up? (as awful as that sounds). Also there are ways to induce termination without medical supervision, there's a lot of herbal ways to do this which are readily available :(

I know it seems unfair on the majority of us that wouldnt terminate a certain sex but it very real that people of certain religions do do this...the hospital near me, its policy is not to tell...

It is sad it has to come to it but I do understand why x

I wouldn't mind not knowing if it could save lo's from abortion x

Having said all this out 16 week and 20 week scans wern't very good at hiding it from us at all!

See that's the thing, the staff might not actually be able to tell you verbally but I bet a lot of probes hover over willy's for a while lol xxxxxxxxx

That makes me mad our culture is not to abort babies because of their sex so why do we suffer cos of others grrr! My aunt said she has delivered babies where the dads have walked out if it's a girl! That is so terrible :-(
I have loved knowing that I am havi g a boy has helped me bond jn mh eyes :-(

so change the way its done, no gender scan til after the abortion limit or change the limit....not make everyone unable to know.

Or make abortion illegal full stop unless it's for medical reasons

I do understand why this is operational in some areas. It is an unfortunate fact of life that babies are aborted because they are not the families desired gender - however what I also worry about is that when these babies are born are they then resented, adopted out or mistreated because of their sex.
I really do not know the answer to this debate ! I think that because we live in a idealised society we have become hardened to abortion ?

Another point to this is what about couples that have a particular sex child affected by a condition? sex selection here should be ok , right?
Obviously in some circumstances abortion is absolutely the right thing to do for mother or child but in others it is simply a matter of preference or convenience.

It's a toughie, i want to find out the sex of my baby and it doesn't seem fair that i shouldn't be able to know for this reason. If i asked and a nurse said to me 'sorry i can't tell you that because you might abort it' i'd be livid. It shocks me that anyone would do that. I would advise anyone who would be so selective and materialistic about gender to strongly reconsider whether they should be parents at all.

It does seem a shame because i also think that knowing gender beforehand can offer the mother extra time to prepare and bond with her unborn child.

I dread to think what would happen to such selective families if this is stopped and they end up in the delivery suite with the wrong gendered newbord in their arms. The poor baby would probably be resented from day one. Absolutely terrible.

i believe abortion should be a bit stricter. i thought they brought in laws in china about how many kids they were allowed cos of overpopulation which in part contributed to the abandonment of baby girls after birth. id be ok with gender selection at conception, id also be ok with a lower limit abortion as i think its too late currently. likewise i understand some ppl need abortions (rape vics etc) so i dont think they should be banned completely but i think theyre way too easily handed out and contraceptives arent as pushed on teens as they should be iykwim.

I was told that this was why my hospital don't tell you the sex, but it might not have been true. x

The thing that annoys me in the article is the reference to 'extra cost' of checking the sex, surely that's part of the scan checks anyway?

So what will they stop checking for next to save a bit of money?????
