Hi ladies,

Wondering what the deal is with early scans.... I think the earliest I can see/hear a heartbeat on an ultrasound is 8wks, is that right ?

I need to be early referred for one that early, yes ?

How do I book myself in for an early scan, and when is the earliest I can get one... experiences please...

i have just paid private for mine as there is too much messing about at my GP for a referral and noone really seems to want to help me out despite recurrent MC history

I paid £89 with ultrasound direct and i am in Friday - so flipping nervous

Thank you for sharing, appreciate that.

...and how many weeks are you ?

about 6 weeks, but i am not sure....i actually could be 9-10 ( long story fml )

i had asked today for a reassurance scan but for that i need to see my gp and i cant get an appointment until next week! i just can not wait that long :-(

I paid for a private scan at what I thought was 7 weeks but was actually 6+4, I was able to see the heartbeat but I think they normally say to wait until 7 weeks. As you’ve had bleeding you could try contacting your local EPAU (early pregnancy unit) if your hospital has one and they might be able to book you in for one there xx

ooo I've never heard of an EPAU - will def check it out. Thanks so much... x

I’ve just booked one in Melanie. It’s on 18th so I’ll be 6 weeks 6 days ish. They try abdominally but if not they can do it internally. I wanted this as apparently it’s easier to see and can be more accurate so I like that there is that option. X

is that your local hospital, or ?

Trying to figure out how I get one booked for myself...

Nope I’ve just booked it with a private clinic.
When my friend had her early ones at 5,6,8 and 10 weeks due to bleeding she was just referred by the doctor. Maybe see if you can get a call back from your gp and explain the situation. She normally got seen within the next few days. But her first one they couldn’t did anything as it was too early so she had to go back 10 days later.

The only other way although a little naughty, is wait until you are around 6 weeks, ring up and say you’ve just found out you’re pregnant as you’ve got a 3+ weeks on a clear blue but you’ve been bleeding. Then they will refer you for one. Again no point before 6 weeks as you won’t be able to see the heartbeat anyway and may just worry you more xx

It's not normal practice to offer early scans routinely. I was only offered an early scan after my third miscarriage.

As you've had bleeding, I would see your gp as they should refer you to the Early Pregnancy Unit as you should get a scan due to the bleeding.

Depending on how early you are, they might want to do bloods to check hcg levels as it needs to be over 1000 to see anything on a scan.

Of course you can always book a private scan. Just Google private pregnancy scans in your area.

Thanks so much, appreciate the advice.. x

No worries hun.

Fingers crossed it's good news and the bleeding is just implantation/ breakthrough bleeding.

I went for a scan about 8 weeks last time and plan to again. I believe if they see a heartbeat at 8 weeks the chance of miscarriage is greatly reduced.

Booked in at the same private clinic I went to before and got a half-price (so they say) deal - £49.50

I had a scan at what should of been 6+1 but i was roughly dated at 5+5 saw a heartbeat :)

Hi I’d say as scan is justifiable from 7 weeks unless there’s been a cause for concern. I went to epau for a scan last pregnancy as I was bleeding. Turns out That bean wasn’t meant be. I’m now 8w4d and just want a reassurance scan so I’ve booked a private scan at £49. There is also quite a few available on groupon x

will have a look on groupon now.. thanks.

I've ended up having 5 because of a hematoma blood clot and IVF pregnancy. 1st scan at 4.5 just shown a small sac? 5.2 was still just a sac but bigger, 6.0 was heartbeat, 6.5 was heartbeat and crl on track and 8.5 was a full on looking baby! I'm in Spain and have to say they have been great. But hopefully no more now til 12 weeks! The clot has also gone pretty much and they now say its no danger... pgew!

With both of my boys I had private scans - one at 7w(first boy) and one at 8w(second boy).

Heart beats were present in both as well as fetal pole.

The only difference Id say was the anatomy at that stage. Huge difference between physicality of the two. First boy was a wee blob with a heart beat, second son was like a wee mini baby - could see arms waving and everything.

I don't think Id go as early as 6, but that is only my preference.

Good luck!
