if you are breastfeeding you are advised to not use them for the first 3 weeks

It will depend on your baby.how intrested they are..I personally started with an orthodontist one as i have heard others on here saying once there little ones were on a particular type of dummy their LO's wouldn't swap.

It is now advised you put your LO to sleep with a dummy for prevention of Sids ( if they will take it)

Dylan has his when he is tired , occasionally if he has been unwell or if i can't feed him immediatly like in the middle of a supermarket...He now isn't bothered with his dummy and prefers his thumb ..

Once you get to know your baby you will know whats best for them

I can only answer using my personal experience - I gave Austin a dummy when he was 10 days old, I hadn't planned to because I don't like seeing toddlers running round with them.

Austin was a very sucky baby, he wanted to be permanently attached to the boob and would wake up, have a little suck, then fall asleep again. I only gave him the dummy when I was sure that there was nothing else wrong with him, and I knew he couldn't be hungry.

He still only has a dummy occasionally and has started prefering to suck his thumb to go to sleep anyway. I'm hoping he'll be completely weaned off it by 12 months.

I've found the dummy really useful, provided you don't just stick it in baby's mouth as soon as they start crying there shouldn't be any problem.

Hi Midna, I would say it depends on the child. My first was not a content baby, all he did was cry and fed on me every 2 hours. After a few days of this I gave him a dummy and it settled him completely. He wanted to comfort suck. He absolutely loved his dummy and became completely attached to it I always had to have spare in case he lost it (and he would only have one type). I took it off him in the day when he was a toddler but he loved to have it to go to sleep and he was about 3 - 3 1/2 when I took it off him at night. I had no probs taking it off him.

My daughter was a more content baby. I tried her with a dummy and she spat it straight out so I never tried again.

My youngest had a dummy to fall asleep then spat it out. He's 11 months now and doesn't have it at all. He only really had it to go to sleep for about a week.

Neither of mine had a dummy. I did buy one "just in case" but never felt the need to try it. I always said if they sucked their thumbs I would rather give them a dummy but luckily neither of them did.

I was the same as Urchin, i bought one just incase but never felt the need to use it. Thea never seemed to need it so i didnt bother.

I HATE dummys!!! My LO never had one and neither will this one, I'd rather go and see to them and soothe them than shoving something in their mouth :? Just my opinion :)

Neither Josh nor Seb liked/likes dummies. Josh NEVER took one. Seb will have a couple of sucks and spit it out, I think he has come to the conclusion that if there is no food coming out then there is no point having it in his mouth :rotfl: He tends to suck on his hands and has started finding his thumb.

i gave a dummy to my lill girl to keep her quiet and let her mouth be active quietly gives her something to do then.

also this bouncer we got her has vibrations and she sometimes likes dummy while sitting there.
