My grandad has very very kindly offered to buy us a brand new dishwasher (people don't ever buy us stuff so this is a very welcome exception!)...

Any ideas what we should be looking for? Ie which feature is the most important to you. We've never had one so we're just comparing the stats on them all really, but if you guys know a specific thing is a bit of an annoyance to you, you might be able to prevent us being stuck with it too!!

Also, whats the deal with cleaning them and stuff? I know there are tablets, but ... huh?! Advice please!!

a top shelf wash is always handy, as for cleaning them, i just get one of the dishwasher cleaning things that you just put upside down in the cutlery holder ohh and a wipe around the door now and again with a damp cloth...good luck with your hunting!

im still learning to get on with mine, am about to run the cleaning stuff through next time it's empty. as for the tablets, we've been on the supermarkets own brand but noticed they had tesco value ones last time so will give them a whirl to see if they are any better/worse than other types cos it's a massive difference in the price.

to be honest id rather we just did the washing up by hand because i need a lot of stuff again before the dishwasher has had a chance to fill up but OH won't hear of getting rid of it!

thats why i use my top shelf wash, it is really handy especially throught the daytime if there are just a few mugs and juice cups and bottles, as fof tablets, the tesco value ones are crap! i use Fairy liquid ones they are usually on offer the most too, hunt around as i get mine from wilkinsons and sometimes Tesco have them on offer.

I'd look for the most enviromentally friendly one you can find, for example one that does a half load so you don't have to run it half empty (not very economic or enviromentally friendly). I'd love a dishwasher but I don't like the idea of waiting for it to be full before I run it, I like to do my washing up throughout the day and not let it build up. I'd also worry that after the novelty had worn off nothing would end up being unloaded from it back into the cupboards and drawers and we would live out of the dishwasher, so to speak

Anyway, don't let me piss on your cornflakes. What a lovely gift! I'm jealous :D

 Think I spend far too much time in male company

Can i just add my friends partner works as an appliance repairman fixing washig machines, dishwashers for one of the major electrical stores & he said to us dont buy the tablets that are 5in1 etc.

Reason being is they claim to do all these 5 different things like glass shine blah blah blah but they dont work as the tablet dissolves all at once when really all the different actions should be done at different parts of the wash all you need is basic tablets, rinse aid & dishwasher salt & then one of the cleaning pots now & again as others have mentioned. :cheer:

I'm sure I've seen somewhere that putting cut up lemons in your dishwashers helps it stay fresh :) Was probably Kim & Aggie

We bought the cheapest AAA rating one we could find which is a Becko. We have had it 3 years now and think its brill. we even use it to clean Jakes bottles and cups in (we bought a special basket to put them in) but obviously sterilsied them when he was younger.

We just buy tesco value tablets as they do just a good a job as any other imo

What a lovely gift from your grampy
