Had mw yesterday at 40+2 and I was sure last appointment she said that I'd have a sweep this one, but she didn't do one. I know I should've asked but I'm so bloody crap like that :wall2: And now I'm really disappointed cos I was having lots of pains yesterday morning and I think a sweep may have really set things off.
I went in for my appointment late so I reckon she was just out of time. Either that or she just couldn't be bothered? She asked me to book a double appointment for thurs next week for a sweep but I will be 9 days overdue by then!!
I'm just pissed off with myself I didn't even ask....stupid shyness, argh!!!
And it turns out she isn't even there next week so it'll either be a midwife who I've met once before and seems nice, or even a midwife I've had once before and was absolutely rubbish. She nearly dropped a folder on my head, spilt her tea, and didn't even know to take my blood...really don't want her doing my sweep

Sorry for that rant :)

However, on a good note, I now only measure 36cms and midwife couldn't feel any of the head so baby has well and truly dropped  Maybe it means all this bouncing/walking is working and a little bit more might do the trick...you never know!
She has also turned a little bit from being back-to-back and is now classed as 'lateral', so giving up my slouching on the sofa has obviously helped :)

Aw Hun, could you not give her a call and just say to her you had thought you'd get a sweep yesterday, really emphasise the fact you want a homebirth, and you are keen to get things moving? Sometimes it's easier to ask over the phone that face to face too. Hope you get things moving today! X

It's frustrating isn't it. Both times I went over I begged for sweeps but apparently "new studies" have shown they are most effective at 10 or 11 days over so they won't even try round here til then x

Ah amyjayne, maybe that's why then. She did say that even doing it next week there's only a 1 in 8 chance of it working so I guess they go by a similar thing.
KatieB - she isn't at my local surgery except for thursdays and I can't drive any further in this weather otherwise I might consider it, although I'd probably bottle out last minute lol! I'm terrible at standing up for myself :(

I know what you mean about fing shy to ask, i hate asking doctors etc to do things lol
And I had a brand new midwife for mine, but she was like 100x nicer than my normal one! I want to keep her, she talked through everything and was really sweet, unlike my clinical scowly one.

Oh sorry you didnt get your sweep but if baby's engaged then maybe she will make an appearance in her own time soon!

Fingers crossed all falls into place for u asap

I don't know if this is the same everywhere but the midwives here do a drop in clinic once a week at all the local childrens centres. You don't need an appointment to see them. They'll check baby's heartbeat, measure you and do sweeps if you're overdue. Maybe worth looking into it and seeing if there is a clinic today you can go to? X

Oh no that's a shame. Good idea about surestart centres though. Luckily weather here cleared up. It makes me a bit cross that across the country there are different guidelines as to pregnancy. At my midwife appointment y day she tried to get me booked in for sweep today (37+5)!!!!! as she is so big. Why don't they all stick to the same guidelines so pregnant ladies don't get confused as some seem to get told the complete opposite of others. I hope u get sorted as being over can't be much fun and remember from previous posts how much you want your homebirth xx

It is crazy that it varies across the country. I have been told that they won't do a sweep until 10 days overdue as it's ineffective before. I don't think that can be entirely true - my friend had one at 5 days overdue and gave birth 24 hours later.

I would really like to have a sweep earlier than 10 days to give me a fighting chance of having the baby before Christmas. Am going to ask the mw when I see her again next week.

Purplecat-think it's a good idea to ask. I was shocked to be honest that she suggested to me that it was an option, as I was under the impression that it wasn't effective until you are overdue. To be fair the last time I saw my consultant (week last fri) he suggested a sweep at 38/39 weeks if my cervix was favourable, due to being Xmas (!) and because I have a seven year old at home that he didn't think would want to be without his mummy on Xmas day! Maybe I'm lucky with the healthcare professionals here in Kettering, it seems they like to offer what everyone else has to battle for x

my midwife wouldnt do t until a week over due, saw midwife at hosp at 41wks who did 1 no problems and 24hrs later had her,

to be honest its something ur OH could do,
it was more uncomfortable for me for him to watch the midwife with her hand that far in me than it was for him, he was like, do u like it that deep then?? lol men! :wall2: :oooo:

xxx

not sure id trust a guy to stick his finger in my cervix to be honest.. lol

plus they have bigger hands!

Hope things kick off on there own soon Becky, sounds like everything is really getting ready down there.
Make sure you ask next appointment, esp re the homebirth, rather than being induced I guess has to happen in hosp
