odd question, and a little premature as i am only 26 weeks, but i like to be prepared...

What type of detergent should i use on baby's clothes?! What is the difference between bio and non bio?!

I'm a little confused as there are so many different types out there ( i use persil colour tablets for our clothes and comfort concentrated softener) but none say "suitable for baby" (an idiots guide would be lovely :) )

Any help / advice would be lovely!!

non bio is best for baby clothes - some of the things i bought said only use non bio on them. (although i am not sure what the difference is!)

Generally colour detergents are bio (I think)

Hi I got this off a home essentials website -

Biological and Non-Bio - What is the difference?

Biological and Non-Biological
What is the difference between Bio and Non-Bio?

All washing powders have a surfactant base which is the 'workhorse' of the product. For Ecover the surfactants are derived from plant based ingredients as opposed to petrochemical surfactants used in a conventional product.

The main difference between a Biological Washing Powdersand a Non-Biological Washing Powder iproduct is that a non-biological product doesn't contain enzymes. To increase the performance of a conventional washing powder oxygen bleach i is added which helps in the removal of stains such as grass. However not all stains are bleachable and therefore enzymes are also added to produce biological laundry products which are better at removing fatty or protein based stains such as blood and egg.

This is off YAHOO questions and answers

Bio tends to do a better job of cleaning organic stains like grass and food because it contains biological cleaning agents but that leaves residues in the material which can continue to actively "digest" and disintegrate organic material. It's a mild effect but can cause irritation of sensitive skin. In extreme cases it can cause clothes to literally fall apart. Persil used to have a brand that did just that and had to be withdrawn.

Non-Bio detergents don't work quite so well as organic versions but they don't leave the irritating residues which is why they're recommended for babies clothes in particular.

I am allergic to biological powder.... I am sure i used that persil washing powder as when I was about 11 I had major skin irritation and doctor said it was enzymes from washign powder eating my skin!!!!!

We use Faith in Nature washing liquid for all our washes. It is great, got to say it doesn't leave it smelling as fresh/nice as something like fairy non-bio (what we used to use) but it cleans just as good, and it's natural.
For poo/wee stains on LO's clothes I soak in VANISH and then wash as normal.

We buy it in bulk, but you can buy smaller size.

Hope this helps.

I'm using either Persil Non Bio or Fairy for all our clothes now and Fairy Fabric softener.

I've used Fairy for years and won't be changing as its non bio :)

Non bio all the way :cheer:

Thanks everyone!

so non-bio is the way forward for LO's clothes, and good to ehar i can use vanish on her whites.

One question down, about a million more to go!

So am i.....especially my legs.....my mom used to wash all my clothes in bio, and my school tights  I felt like someone had rubbed my legs down with coarse sandpaper

Non bio all the way for me! :D

We use fairy non-bio (love the smell!!) and comfort pure conditioner. Oh and Vanish for soaking bibs and tops etc that are stained....which is a step up as all I used to have soak was pooey vests and trousers, but now we have new orange food stains to battle with

i use non-bio anyway as my boyf has sensitive skin, bio brings him out in a rash. bio contains enzymes which i think are little microscopic things similar to what ur stomach uses to digest food  which "digest" the dirt from the clothes? thats the extent of my knowledge on it lol i only did 8 months of human biology a-level

but non-bio is def kinder and use "sensitive" fabric softener, if u need to get clothes clean do a 50 degree wash. x
