Hi all

My wife has had her first positive pregnancy test Saturday. We tried two normal cheap ones with the line and then two clear blue digital ones later in the day that all come back positive saying 1-2 weeks :).

Is she 1-2 weeks or do you have to add 2 weeks.... She was supposed to have her period on Wednesday.

Is there any chance that this can go wrong? Even after 4 tests? I'm so excited just dreading something going wrong :(

This is our first so I'm completely new lol.... She's going to ring doctors to see a GP tomorrow morning is this the right thing to do?

Any help on what we should be doing would be very thankful for.

Thanks

A positive is a positive (especially 4 positives) so congrats! The medics date it from the start of the last period before conceiving, so if she's 2 weeks on a test it's more like 4, but there will be a scan further along in the pregnancy that'll date it more accurately ;-)

Hi, welcome to PF and congratulations on your positive test :)

Technically you ovulate around 2 weeks into your cycle but when dating a pregnancy you go back to the first day of last period - that's generally what doctors/midwives work from, although the date may change when you get scans! So for talking sake if your wife has a 28 day cycle with her last period on the 28th of October she would be 4 weeks and 5 days pregnant (4+5) and due 3rd of August - hope that makes sense :)

I won't lie, of course things can go wrong and there's not a lot you can do to prevent it. I'm sure your wife is taking her vitamins, eating and drinking healthily and taking it easy. That's about all you can do!

Some areas you don't need to phone the GP, you just self refer to the midwife. The receptionist may be able to advise on this but as its your first there's no harm to go see the GP first :)

Good luck xx

It's so lovely to see dad's to be on here too as it is mostly mums things can go wrong and sometimes do all you can do is try to make sure she doesn't have allot of stress to deal with takes her folic acid and vitamin D she can get this from the gp tomorrow just get her to ask, but you've done everything perfectly congratulations x

Something can always go wrong. Your job is to keep telling her that everything will be fine (even if you happen to be freaking out too). She is going to go through so many changes and will probably panic about every little twinge and new feeling. Keep reassuring her.

Hi, first pregnancy here too! First or all congrats to both of you! When I discovered I was pregnant after the home tests I took appointment with the gp and he contacted the hospital for me. He had me doing some blood test and I have now received a letter from the midwife with the dates for the first appointment and scan. note that for me they gave the appointments quite late, when I will be 11 weeks for the midwife and three weeks later for the first ultrasound. You have to be patient! But good luck!

Our local policy was midwife no earlier than 8 weeks, first scan between 11-14 weeks (I was 13w5d by the time I got mine).

The waiting is painful!

Congratulations to you both. The clearblue digital dates from conception so yes adding 2 weeks would be about right. As previous poster has said you date from the first day of your last period but a scan at about 12 weeks will confirm dates. Usually midwife booking appointment is about 8-10 weeks and varies in different areas how you make the appointment but GP receptionist should be able to tell you. Unfortunately things can and do go wrong quite often, miscarriage is very common but the odds are on the side of all being well. Up to 12 weeks is the most risky time with most miscarriages occurring before 8 weeks. Good luck to you both.
