As long as you get strong movements, even if it's a kick, a punch, a pokey outy elbow, whatever that makes you aware the bubs is on the move and is going strong is fine. What doesn't count is flutters, tickles, and the weird under-the-skin-swishing-feeling that I can never describe properly. After much debating and hospital-going, I informed my mw that I was NOT going to 'count the kicks' but instead just be aware of the general movement of my baby and decide whether or not I was happy with it. After two weeks of sluggish movements and less than ten kicks/punches each day, I was so stressed out that I couldn't sleep or anything. I eventually just went with my gut and it really saved my sanity.
You know your baby, and you know what's normal, so any sudden change will be noticed. That's what you report. If you do have a sudden change and you're not happy, phone your midwife and say you've had reduced movement, and you'll get monitored. Be specific about your movement, if it's only light flutters, say so, if you've only been aware of movement for a small part of the day and you're worried cos you've gone hours without movement, say so.
Always err on the side of caution xx
