just wondering if anyone else is going to do it? My hospital has asked me if I want to take a part and I agreed. The blood could be used to replace blood cells in a person who has leukaemie, certain rare inherited diseases or bone marrow failure. I am really excited about it and hope that it will help someone who really needs it.
Ive never heard of that before.. id be happy to give anyone anything but doubt they would want it due to the medication im on. Im a taker rather than a giver! lol
i asked my midwife about doing this, but she said she'd never heard of it!
she said there was no need to bank it for baby as we have no hereditary diseases that it would be useful for, but when i said i wanted to do it for other people she said that's not a done thing over here, apart from maybe in private hospitals.
I told the hospitals each time I had all my children that I wanted to give cord blood but they never did! I dont think a lot of hospitals do it tbh! No-ones mentioned it this time either (Im at a different hospital) but I will still write it on my birthplan!
I would be more than happy to donate, but recently read that there are only a very small handful of hospitals in the country that actually do this, mainly due the vast space they need to store the cord blood.
I seen a website on it the other week which said that there are only about 4-5 hospitals in the country that participate, to take the blood they take the placenta into a seperate room next to the delivery suite to keep it sterile etc. If you google for it Im sure you will find it. think it may have been an NHS page
Yes i did it, my hospital asks you, its not for your baby, just for general storage. i signed up and hopefully not something i will ever need myself, but i think it is a brilliant benefit.
