When I had my 12 week scan the midwife referred me to see a consultant as I have a high BMI. I was expecting it so it wasn't a surprise. The midwife said not to worry as I'm clearly healthy. I don't have any weight related issues/illnesses. I've got the appointment tomorrow morning. Just wondered if any of you girls have had the same? Just want to know what to expect really xx

I didn't but my sis in law did.
Partly because of her bmi and partly because her mum had a suspected blood clot when younger.
Re the BMI she was just told that it might be harder to administer an epidural due to her size and that she was at an increased risk of gestational diabetes.
She had a normal pregnancy, no diabetes, no time for an epidural and a healthy boy at the end of it.
Try not to worry about it, it's just protocol they refer above a cut off point x

My BMI was 42 when I had my previous babies and is 37 for this pregnancy!

I had a glucose tolerance test around 26 weeks (fine both times) and as ClaireM said, the epi didn't work great for me so when I ended up with an emergency c-section I had to have a spinal block. Other than that, for me, everything went absolutely fine. I had perfect pregnancies and recovered well from the c-sections. Hoping this pregnancy is the same!

Hi there,

I am having a consultant led due to a few factors. One being my BMI which is 39, also because of my age (41) and because I have a history of larger babies. I have to have a GD test-had it on my first two as they were big babies but both tests were neg. My first app with the consultant will be when i am 24 weeks. :)

I've been sent a consultant referral and have no idea why :( can't get in touch with my midwife and no idea what's going on, I haven't been told anything but the hospital said I have to see consultants now but they don't know why?! x

Well I didn't get to the appointment yesterday as I woke up with a migraine and couldn't lift my head off the pillow. Now got to wait for another appointment. Thanks for replying girls.
Northerngirl, do you have a high bmi? It's strange that is hasn't been mentioned to you. I'm sure everything is fine. It sounds like ladies under consultant care get well looked after x

Oh no poor you migraines are horrible. No my BMI is normal, hopefully the midwife will contact me tomorrow and let me know what's going on! x

I'm not sure then. I just thought that would be the one reason where you would automatically get refered. Try not to worry, I'm sure your midwife will be able to clarify x

I'm consultant led for bmi over 30 and I like it tbh- the only problem is that I have no choice that I must be in the central delivery suite rather than the birthing unit to have the baby. I has a glucose test for diabetes but last time and this time it came back clear. I have been the picture of health both times :)))
