Hi

I am 5wk4d and today went to see my GP for the first time.

I was expecting my GP to give me all sorts of info but literally typed something in on her computer and sent me on my way.

Can someone please tell me when you first expect to see your midwife and how often you see them after the first visit? Do I get to listen to the heart beat before the 12wk scan?

Im a bit worried to be honest.... I have all these questions like is this cramping normal (but no bleeding) - should I have been given my midwifes number in case there are any problems.

Any help and advice would be appreciated as this is my first pregnancy.

The way its worked with both my pregnancies, was...it was confirmed at the doctors, and after I leave he writes a letter to the local maternity hospital (where you will give birth) and they will write to you and ask you to go in for a check up, dont know if you'll get to listen to heartbeat or get a scan at the first appointment, I dont think you will get a scan untill your 11/12 weeks so it depends how far on you are, and they cant use there listening thing when baby is only weeks old, I think you need to be 16 weeks before that works. So its just a case of holding tight and waiting for that appointment. I've only had one midwife appointment and i'm nearly 16 weeks. I suppose thats one of the down sides of pregnancy, all the waiting about.

this is my situation - I am around 6 weeks and have received very minimal info
I get that there is only so much they can tell you at this point but I feel that I am getting no reassurance or help or anything. but I suppose I am very paranoid about everything since it is my first pregnancy too. just so u know you're not alone in being left sort of in the dark!!

You should defo get a midwife appointment soon, 2/3 weeks after your doctors appointment, if its any longer than that, I would phone the doctor and just double check its been done properly. You'll be able to ask the midwife anything you want when you see her.

What happened for me was I rang my doctors to tell them I am pregnant and they gave me the number for the midwife. I called her and she gave me an appointment 5 days later. She took my blood pressure, asked me questions and felt my tummy for the uterus. She also gave me a booklet on baby testing/scans and told me I will next see a midwife at a home visit and I will get my scan at 11 weeks :) Only 2 weeks to go!

A midwife should be in contact with you soon, if you're very worried though I suggest you try and get the number for the midwives off your doctors surgery xxx

:lol:Hi, I would phone the midwives direct - I went to see my doctor initially when I found I was pregnant and they sent me for a scan at the Early Pregnancy Unit (to make sure it wasn't eptopic)
I had 2 scans there and they said all was ok so far and refered me back to doc. Saw a locum at the surgery who said he would write to the midwifes and they would contact me direct. I wasn't convinced so I found the number online and phoned to make my own appointment.

A week later I got a letter from my dr's saying sorry but the locum gave me the wrong info (hmmm) and I should make my own appointment! They said I should go to a different midwife so I phoned them and they coudn't give me a first appointment for 3 wks which would put me past 12 wks!! so have kept the apppointment I made as it's for tomorow

So, if I was you phone and do it yourself - think there's a baby boom going on at the mo because all the midwives seem to be so busy :yay:

I think it depends on where you are. there is a midwife based at my doctors so i have to make an appointment to see her at around 8 weeks. She will then contact the hospital regarding my scan. This time though i am going to request an early scan as i miscarried last time.

You should have an EPU somewhere near you, give them a ring if you dont get anywhere xxx
