It's bizarre! The amount of people I have seen battered/slashed/stabbed/murdered over a bloody game of football would shock you! I've also had English come into my work who have been 'done in' because they have been English basically. It's probably the exact same in England though

In Scotland it has become kind of the norm for us to 'hate' the english. For Celtic fans to hate Rangers fans and vice versa.In the most part it is all taken in good humour but there is of course exceptions.

I think it is a shame that Hollyhobby has had the brunt of Scottish hatred - obviously she is going to feel bitter about this place - I wouldn't be so harsh to her.

When we went to Scotland for new year it never even entered my head that some Scottish people hated English people I am shocked that some do to be honest, I thought we were all just Great Britain I know we have diferent laws, I found that out when we were gazzumped a few years back, but other than that and as far as people go I thought we were all one country. Seems alot of people here took offense for no reason whatsoever except they maybe Scottish and I told it how it was first hand for me, and even though the individuals here wern't involved they feel like they should speak out for ''their countrymen''.

Are you suggesting that people are defending the minority that treated you that way merely because they are Scottish? Come off it... everyone including myself was referring to the fact that you had decided to tar the entire nation with that brush. The people who treated you that way were just that... a minority. Some of my best friends originate from South of the border and they have lived in a variety of communities across this part of the country. Yet neither of them would share your view.

This is your experience of one small part of one quite obviously small-minded area. It is not representative the entire nation's 5 million inhabitants. I hope you don't judge the many other places you've been in a similar manner if you happened to have had a less than stellar experience there, too. I strongly disagree with the view that in Scotland it's the norm to "hate" the English.

That's definitely what made me angry Holly, you seemed to put the whole nation into one box and that made me frustrated. Despite that I do agree with some of what you are saying, there is a problem with sectarianism in Scotland and racism is definitely not just a black and white issue, but I don't see how you have met 'a lot' of the people of Scotland, despite your age (a fact which you brought into this debate). I don't think its unusual that I would like to try and persuade you that people in Scotland aren't all like the bigoted few you seem to have met and think its a real shame if you continue thinking like this.

I am frustrated as you don't seem to be understanding that if I met you, I'd hate to be judged on my accent or where I'm from. I don't follow the 'old firm' football or have a religion as I've already explained (which is where most of the sectarianism stems from).

Meggie, I certainly don't think its the norm for people to hate the English. Not wishing to start another slightly off topic debate, I wonder if this depends where in Scotland you are from? I live on East Coast, about 45 mins from the border and this attitude just doesn't seem to exist (that I've seen anyway) here.

I hate to see people leave over something like this Holly, I do understand if you need time out, but I would welcome you back despite our views differing as I'd like to hear how your pregnancy goes and wish you all the best with everything.

Wales also got an assembly while England was divided in 12 unelected regionally assemblies (london being the only elected one). These assemblies are operational and funded despite being unelected.

Well, it should be British tax payers, not English

That's my point, when I said I prefer to see us 'united' (as in British) rather than 2 seperate countries. Because if people start going down the road of Scotland v England, it would be very difficult for Scotland to be the place it is without England and all the money it gets from English taxpayers.
I just wish the UK was seen as one country with equal benefits for everyone rather than any one area benefiting from getting heavy subsidies.
