Hi to all mums out there.:)

We were looking at different books - not the pregnancy ones but about babies and toddlers and felt completely at loss.

There seem to be a few around but I have absolutely no idea which ones are helpful. I know book wont prepare me for everything but I want to be as prepared as I can for things like establishing a routine, what to expect in terms of development, even things like baby massage and so on.

Have you bought a book that you thought was very useful? If so, please share your opinion with me.

The only book I've ever had about parenting is the one your hv gives you after you have the baby. It's called birth-five and everyone gets one.
It was my bible when I had my daughter, it helped me so much.
I've read parts of it since having my 2nd child but everything's come back to me from my 1st and this forum's helped me loads x xl

I am obiviously going to be pestering people on the forum, just thought - how much time will I actually get to read the book after lo is here? I have read the PG one they give you but want to read in advance.

Maybe I am a control freak...

I've just bought a book called The Wonder Weeks. Someone mentioned on here recently about 'the wonder weeks'. It's about your baby's devleopmental phases. Like when you're pregnant and you go on pregnology and it details every week how your baby develops? Well this is what the book does after birth. We downloaded the iphone app and I've just bought the book too. I must say it's amaaaaaaazing. Wish I'd known about it before Oscar had been born to be more prepared but the phases are spot on. I cannot recommend it enough.

I also have What to Expect The First Year. Bought this book when I was pregnant and never read it lol. Have used it for a bit of reference since Oscar was born but really wasn't that helpful for me.

xxxxx

i was given a book and we bought one on sleep. The 'experts' get so opinionated and I got quite annoyed with them to be honest. Just get peoples advice and work with your instinct as you go along. You'll get lots of info from your health visitor and if youhave a specific question about sleep or feeding you can just ring up for advice anyway.

Id advise anyone to stay away from books which try and tell you how to parent, unless they acknowledge that there are different ways of doing things and each child and family is unique.

Im reading "the heart of parenting; how ot raise an emotionally intelligent child" which is really interesting but more for the toddler/child phase than looking after a baby.

I do agree there are different opinionsout there so I wanted to read a couple just to know what worked for people.........I think it will help me to make decisions iykwim

What works for one baby wont work for another and i wont know until he is here. Can you phone HV to ask questions?

We've got 'Your Baby: Week by Week' which is v good. You only need to read a few pages once a week and it's v helpful.

ive read, your baby week by week, and the what to expect in the first year! i got them from the library though, didnt actually buy them! they were deffo useful, however now i just use this forum! =))

I just use the forum i did a GCSE in child devvelopment and most of the stuff from that has come back xx

Never had a kiddie stage book, I think every child is different, and maybee reading too much on what to expect and when may not be as good for you, just go with it and take a day at a time, this forum is great, read the posts in baby and todler , and ask a mum sections and most topics should come up ahead of when you get there

I love reading books about stuff but after having owen had to take the baby ones with pinch of salt sometimes they worried me-like I wasnt doing it right or something! I get quite a few out of the library, the infant development one is good. We also read the baby whisperer ones which I found really interesting. You may have the odd ten mins to read once baby is here lol!

Really want to get the wonder weeks one, need to wait til payday...

Am currently reading wonder weeks and it's a-mazing lol. They did like 35 years of studies and I just can't believe how spot on the phases are. I know each baby has their own personality etc but the phases are so accurate. Wish I'd had this book before Oscar was born!! I'll be prepared for the next one lol xxx
