Hey Ladies,

I had the Midwife here last week givng me a talk on BF (I have all intention to BF)

She mentioned that we must not give a dummy at all when BF due to confusion & baby will lose his correct method of feeding.

I've bought dummy's, I have not any judgmental issues with them but was wondering what are the thoughts from ladies who are currently BF & if you use dummy successfully?

I first gave lo a dummy at around one week old as he was comfort feeding and he took a little while to get used to it but did suck it for a while. He's three weeks now and will suck a dummy when he's hungry or as a comfort thing, but most of the time just spits it out. I also give him expressed bottles, sometimes he will suck his dummy, then take a bottle, then be on the boob a few minutes after and never gets confused, so I think every baby's different!
I reccomend the mam start dummys :-)

So it can be very dependent on the baby then really.

MW was explaining it as I've I would certainly ruin all his latching method. - I think she tried making me feel bad in regards to dummys.

They say try to establish bf first because there is a risk of nipple confusion. I think there's a chance it can affect your supply too - in the early days you need baby on the breast sucking as much as s/he wants to get your milk supply up - sucking a dummy instead inhibits this.

My hv recommended a dummy from about 4 weeks old xx

I tried giving my lo a dummy quite early as he used to use me as dummy! He didn't ever take to it and I tried every sort out there. He now sucks his thumb.

There is a risk of nipple confusion, but in my experience its rare.

If you read the guidance given in the USA with regards to SIDS they recommend use of a dummy from birth.

Ive bought a dummy but im waiting for a few weeks until i offer it to James as i dont feel the need for one as hes so little. With my other 2 kids my daughter refused a dummyand my son would take it to fall asleep but would spit it out most of the time. You will just have to see what your baby wants to do. X

I've got one for my little boy who is almost 4 weeks... Have tried it a couple of times recently but he just spits it out anyway! Hasn't affected his latch but I think it is good to establish bf first. X

Thank you for the replies.

I think esbalish feeding & flow first & see how it goes.

I used a dummy from one week as he was using me as a dummy, which makes you very sore and I don't think helps with establishing routine. Never had any issues with latch or supply. I love dummies, great for sucky babies! :)
