You absolutely don't need the stress! I'm sure that once you're in labour he'll pipe down, it's a whole different game then! I've told my oh that when i'm in labour, if he starts he can bugger off, this is my moment, not his! I am a bit blunt though, blame the hormones... 
Seriously though, I think they get scared. Instinct gets us through it, they haven't got a clue so they try to assert control in this way.
