Aspardame update - good news for all fizzy drink lovers!

Woah
I'd read all of the posts but I can't be funking arsed!
I do agree with what Cosmic said in her first and second post though. I tried to make her point earlier but in a different light - There's too much to think about, too much for me any way.

I agree with your first post tiff, it is a lot to think about. I have to read labels daily for my peanut allergy - it's a pain in the arse ;) x

Your spot on CG it would be very difficult to cut it out completely, although some people do, and i'll be honest there must be stuff on that list that i've consumed, but on the other hand, i'm also as carefull as I can be (do all I can) to make sure I dont consume any more than I do already. Thats all we can do I suppose.

Cutting it out totally in drinks would make a big difference, dont under-estimate how powerful this stuff is.

I think unless you are allergic, probably best to just avoid it as much as possible because it is in so much stuff (unfortunately)

One great way to do that is to avoid 'sugar free' and 'lite' products as their sugary big brothers are often less full of the stuff than those products.

it was invented as a low calorie sugar alternative, so often alternative drinks and foods will have more in or aspartame in where others would not.

 OMG!!! Thanks CG for that! I'm a mum of 2 and work 2 jobs as well, I don't have time to scan every product to try and find an alternative! If that makes me a bad mum then so be it! I really don't have the time to read every label and search for alternatives everytime I go shopping! X x x

And that was my point at the beginning - limitation!!!

Tbh I think I will certainly be checking more labels! I just checked my Activia yoghurts, thankfully there ok :)

Me neither hun, you're not a bad mum, you try to do all within your power to do right by your lo's.
I work full time and have 4 kids - I try to feed them well, plenty of fruit, veg and protein. Yeah, they have a bit of jam on their toast in the morning, they have birthday cakes on their birthdays, they even have the odd fizzy drink  all containing aspartame I'm sure.

Maybe when I win the lottery and dont have to work I will read every label of every item that goes into my trolley, until then I try to give them the best diet I can x

Its impossible to read every package we pick up! I went in trying to read the drink labels the other night, it really stressed me out!
Your right I shouldn't have said that, we are human's that work and raise kids our kids the best we can! Its impossible to read all labels, but I will try and read the odd one, especially if it says low fat, no added sugar and so on. I'm done with stressing over this now, its gave me a headache lol x x x

Thats a really sensible attitude to it hun, thats what I do and I'm sure what most working mums do x

I think that if you get an understanding for what goes into certain things, then you dont have to read every label, its fairly instinctive, like it makes sense if you make a spag bol, it will be less full of crap than a shop-bought one. you sort of get a grasp of things that have less rubbish in them, like full fat squashes rather than 'no sugar' alternatives etc

it doesnt need to be as intensive as reading every label :) and even if you do read every label, you dont have to forever :)

Tbh the only things on the labels I really check is the 'wheel', I like to know about calories, saturated fat, salt etc

I know with all low fat/sugar products, something else is normally put in it's place but I tend to avoid these but out of personal choice down to my diet, not because of what they contain

Like you cosmic with your children, I only tend to eat healthy food but on the odd occasion, normally every 3-4 weeks I will 'blow out' & have naughty things :)

xxxx

Life would be pretty boring without the weekly treat Kez x

Wow !

Although this thread got very heated... I am glad I have read through this now!

I had absolutely no idea that this was so bad for me and my unborn child!

Thanks to everyone who has opened my eyes!

I too think it would be very difficult to cut out EVERYTHING that contains aspartame but I will deffo try harder to avoid the food items that have this in.

Lol cosmic I just read through your post with the list of items that contain aspartame... You have pretty much summed up my weekly diet... Dammit this is going to be difficult!!!!!!

Threw all my haribos away now. Bloody cravings!!!

Xxx

I know it was definately in the jelly I ate for my lunch  x
