Hi ladies -

We have been trying for around 13 months now - we have a nearly 4 yr old that was unplanned so assumed that baby number 2 would come no problem

Little did I know how hard it would be!

Husband has had his sperm all checked out and it came back ok. I've had my blood test for day 5 & day 21. My day 21 came back as 24 when they tell me it should ideally be 30?

Dr has now referred me to fertility which I presume is at local hospital (don't know why I didn't ask) she has said they may not accept me as my Bmi is higher than it should be.

Has anyone any experience of this? I'm turning 40 next week so times not on my side

Yes I have experience of being referred. The referral must be made before your 40th birthday as 40 is the cutoff. I think they said they'd take me if my BMI was under 30. They will take you with a 30 BMI but will insist you do their weight watchers program or get your weight down. I did low carb and got it down myself.

Weight becomes more of an issue as you get older, so it may make a huge difference if you can get it to 25 or less.

It'll probably take 3 months to get an appointment but as long as the referral was made when you were 39 you should be ok.

Hi Nicky

Just a couple of thoughts.

Do you have a 28 day cycle? I heard progesterone should be above 30 to indicate ovulation but your reading would only be accurate if you're cycle is 28 days long. It's amazing how many GPs don't know this.

I believe a BMI of under 30 is needed for treatment on the NHS but this should not exclude you from investigations. I know someone in this situation. She got all investigations without any problems but they won't treat her until her weight is down.

As you have a child already will you get NHS treatment? If not they may be more relaxed about age and weight f you have treatment privately.

Also I only waited around 6 weeks for an appointment and that wasn't the first available so it may vary depending on area.

Good luck!!

They said that to me recently about bmi. They will investigate (If we get to June) but won't treat me till BMI is under 30.

Best of luck to you

Hi, when it was referred I had to get my bmi under 30 and they like for you to be continuing to lose weight as 29 is the high end of what they'll allow. At my previous clinic, you had to be referred before you turned 40 and they would not treat on the nhs funding if there was a child conceived naturally (as far as I can recall, this may have changed now). X

Thank you for your replies ladies just realised my last post last week didn't save.

I've had my letter from Drs now and booked in on the NHS refferal system to my local hospital and my appointment is on 16th April.

I'd just like to know if my body is still capable of having a baby as we have been trying so long. Ideally I'd like to be checked out and any tests done. I wouldn't have IVF as I know I am very fortunate to have one baby (nearly 4yr old) but it's the uncertainty not knowing if my body is working properly so to speak along with the heart break each month taking a test And it always being negative.
