Emily Mary arrived 26/8/14! Just home last night, so will update her birth story in a day or so
Here's our story:
We went in first thing Monday morning for our induction. The midwife was great and ward was empty, so we were given a bed right away in an antenatal room. They did a trace and the consultant came in with two registrars, straight away. One last scan before things got going The. Consultant explained about doing a pessary, drip, and the induction process, risks etc. All was well so, by 9:30 I was given the pessary. The MW said we would be reevaluated after six hours, if not ready we would be given the drip instead of a second pessary (too much risk of rupturing my old uterine scar). We had lunch - talk about potato overload lol, I had cottage pie with roast potato and mash potato lol and since there was plenty to go around dh was given a plate too. Anyways, had a nice walk after that and things were getting painful so we went back to the bed. By 2 I was in agony with contractions. The mw had already given me paracetamol and codeine so she checked my progress. Frustratingly my cervix was only 1 cm and still very high and back - not ready to break waters, so she gave me some diamorphine. By then more people had been shown to the room. With my pain increasing, I couldn't keep quiet anymore. I felt so guilty for moaning in pain (stupid I know). The mw moved us to a delivery suite for privacy (I think I was scaring the other ladies lol) and our new mw arrived. Jane......she was a godsend. I was 4 cm by 7 pm so she told the consultant it was epidural time - gas and air wasn't enough anymore. The epi went in with no problems, just having to time the produce between frequent strong contractions. The consultant was surprised we were only at 4 cm, but left us to get on. Jane was very reassuring and let me keep the gas and air (I fell in love with the second tank lol). The epi was complete, still had pain on my left side but things were a bit better. Dh asked if he should go and come back after a few hours rest (it was around midnight). Jane said he could, but best not too as she thought it wouldn't be much longer - I had finally hit 7 cm! Consultant was still in disbelief that my cervix refused to lower down! I was miserable and tired, but at 5 am we were ready to push. Jane encouraged me on for an hour and a half and finally went for the consultant. I knew something was wrong, but she was so positive. The consultant rushed in for a quick exam and said we needed theatre.the baby e
Was fine, but just wasn't moving down. She wanted to use forceps or a ventouse and failing those a c section. I knew it was for the best, so I agreed. My dh (poor guy) had passed out in his chair about 20 min. Encore this happened, so I had jane explain it to him while I was being prepped. He was very frightened but kept a brave face. I saw the wonderful epidural man again and after some tests, he decided it was time for a spinal block because my epi had left me with pain and in reading the amt wasn't effective. Block in place, Jane told me when to push, consultant used the forceps and Emily was with us in three pushes at 6:55am! 8 lbs 1 ounce Safe and sound, we were both fine. In recovery I got to have skin to skin - it was wonderful.
Since then we've been ebf and she's been feeding like a champ! I've got sore boobs, but it's so worth it. It was another marathon labor session for me, but in the end it's well worth it.
