Ok so i just saw in a book that you should stay away from animals for the first 12 weeks. But it didnt say why

Now i am a bit woried why i must not go near animals and problems can occur from it.

I wouldnt worry as much if i had one or two pets but as i have 48 hamsters that i have been cleaning out and feeding over the last few days I am like shit what will happen

I cleaned out my rabbit and guinea pigs all the time upto about 8 weeks ago when it got too much for me to do. I would wear gloves whilst I was cleaning them out but took no other precautions.
I also held all of them without wearing gloves and got peed on a few times and all is well with my baby.
Just take it easy when you are cleaning them out and maybe wear gloves.

pregnant ladies should stay away from sheep and lambs....as they can carry an infection which causes miscarriage.....and this is genuinely true...

but i havent heard of staying away from other animals....just cat litter trays and poo!! xx

Weve got 2 dogs, 2 hamsters, a rabbit and a tortoise and i didnt take any special precautions when cleaning them out or handling them, and i didnt stay away from them. Ive never heard that you have to stay away from animals, only to take care when cleaning out cat litter trays as their faeces contains a parasite called toxoplasmosis that can be harmful to your unborn child and farm animals can carry listeria, campylobacter, salmonella, and cryptosporidium, which can all be harmful to the baby if contracted (cases of contracting these are few and far between!!)

I have 2 dogs, My MIL has a dog too.
You're not allowed to go near dog poop and other animal poop :p but as for animals, I'd say hamsters are perfectly fine because they don't go outside in the open and bring germs back into the house.. dogs do. I am still in contact with the dogs, I don't feel I should stay away from them. They're my babies! xxx

You have to watch with cat poo because of toxoplasmosis but long as your washing your hands properly or wearing gloves there shouldn't be any problems. My dog has been my shadow since I got pregnant!

ive only heard about cats poo.. just googled it and got this..

Hamsters, guinea pigs and mice
Rodents, such as mice, hamsters and guinea pigs, are popular pets in many homes. But women who are pregnant or who plan to become pregnant should be very careful with rodents. These animals may carry a virus called lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV).

The house mouse, a wild rodent found near and in homes, is the main source of the virus. Pet rodents like hamsters and guinea pigs can become infected with LCMV after being in contact with wild rodents at a breeding facility, pet store or home.
  • People can get LCMV through contact with a rodent’s urine, blood, saliva, droppings or nesting materials.
  • The infection can also spread when a person breathes in dust or droplets that have LCMV. Examples: while sweeping up mouse droppings or cleaning out the hamster cage.

Our hamsters and rabbits are from breeders and bred ourself So I think that wouldnt affect our lot.

I knew about cats and farm animals so thats ok as i hate cats and i dont plan to go to a farm hehe

I just thought because of the poo when cleaning out. I will get the OH to finish the cleaning out out of my way then i will go feed and doing any matings after

Thanks all :)

Well I'm a dairy farmer, have cats, dogs horses, rabbits, chickens etc .... too and my doc not in the slightest concerned. If you take normal hygiene precautions after being around animals you'll be fine.

Cat poo, rats and livestock. I have 2 cats and I use gloves and wash my hands well if I do the litter tray. My friend is a vet and shes 23 weeks now and deals with all animals and shes just very careful and is fine. X

You have to stay away from reptiles too because they naturally have salmonella in their gut, but basic hygiene such as washing hands will keep you safe :)
