As Jamie is 6 months old now  we have decided to try and get him to drink out of a beaker type cup, one of these -

but he screams blue murder at me, I've got a feeling the milk comes out to quickly for him. My DH asked the H/V this morning if she has any tips to get him to drink from it & she said to superglue one of the holes up so the flows not so fast
wtf? Is it me or is that the most stupid bit of advice?

If anyone has any tips we would be grateful! :D

Are you using the white spout or the green spout in the avent range???
The white ones are from 3 months and Charlie is really happy with these although he does splutter a little at time but the green ones have bigger holes for 6 months onwards but we are going to stick with the others for now.

im still using bottle for harleys juice..

i cannot believe she said use superglue :rotfl:

iv got a beaker for B as he really suffered goin on to a beaker (suffered really bad wind ) from avent i think, had like a teat that isnt like a bottle and isnt like a beaker and it get em used to the next stage beaker which Braydon will be going on on friday lol

omg health visitors cant half be thick somtimes!

alex has one that you has a non spill thingy and he has to suck it a bit so it doesnt come out too fast. he has it mainly for water, keep meaning to get him another for his milk - he wont be a problem with it now though as he is really used it.

he was a bugger with it at first though but i just persevered and he got the hang in the end. maybe you could try jamie with it with his water first - then while he is getting used to it you dont have to worry that he istn taking his milk?

i will try to remember to bring a sterilised one with me on wednesday and he can try it if you like.

oh and i love the superglue idea - i just love exposing my child to harmful chemicals so i really dont see why you didnt take her advice!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I know, I don't know what i'm thinking *pops off to B & Q for some extra stong super superglue*

mdsremos, we have both spouts but have been trying with the white ones. He manages to drink a few mouthfulls of milk then whacks the bottle away & pushes his it out with his tongue!! stubborn little @*>+

Sarah, have you got a picture of the one you use for B? I'm thinking maybe trying a different brand now.

I've tried loads and Brody likes this one best:

I used to suck a bit of juice through it for him, so he knew what it was for. The top of it is like a clear rubbery straw with a little valve in it.

It's from Boots.

My HV told me that I should not give Rebecca milk out a cup until she is over 12 months. I should introduce her to water or baby juice in a cup just now tho - I am clueless as to why.

Superglue? Imagine if he sucked that hard he swallowed the lil bit glue in the hole---crazy :wall:

What the hell????
My HV told me that Jack would never say mum if i let him have a non spill beaker!!!!!!!

Jack has only just started with the Avent ones, he just couldn't get the hang of them but he loves these as you don't have to suck hrad its more of a squeeze and they don't leak

Jacks is blue though :D

I might wait a bit and try it again, maybe he's just too young at the mo. I don't know!! He'll end up hating me at this rate

Hi Nicki

I've tried Olivia with a doidy cup and she manages ok but there's lot of mess and it doesn't travel very well! So I've been using one of these http://www.tommeetippee.co.uk/shop/products/first-cup-4-months.html. It just has a small hole in the spout, you don't need to suck to get the fluid out.

I'm a bit confused about the cups though, I've been giving Olivia one now and again because she doesn't always take a bottle so if someone else is looking after her at least I know she'll get milk from the cup. Is the idea to introduce them to cups to help speech development or to prevent their teeth decaying from taking juice from a bottle/to wean them off bottles by the time they're a year old?

Lucy

I wouldn't worry hun, Ella is almost 10 months old and still wont take out of a beaker, she'll have a little bit then refuse it! I might try the flexi straw becuase she drinks mc donalds milkshakes throught a straw!

Not really sure why they say to get them to drink from a cup rather than a bottle, I think it has something to do with milk decaying the teeth but I don't see the difference between the two, they still have milk in their mouths!! It may have something to do with having teeth & sucking?
