Any other young mums in here opting to not have the downs screening done?
I only ask cause I know the risks are lower so is there any point?

I didnt have the downs test the first time round when pregnant with Zack. He was my first so it didnt really matter. The risks are lower if your younger, but saying that some young people have downs babies aswell.

I did the test this time round, mainly because I was more worried about it. Having a two year old son already is handful enough, so I wanted to know if this baby is alright. To prepare myself. Turns out im very low risk, but im glad I went for the test.

Can I ask why your not going for the test?

i have never had the test, and i wont have it,the baby will be brought up by us no matter what ,so why waste my pregnancy worrying about what ifs

well I decided not to have the test for a few reasons:

A: I will still love my baby whether it has downs or not
B: It is my first baby so I have no other commitments

And lastly I know I would have the love and support of my family and friends.
If I already had a small child then I expect I would to be ready, but I am not prepared to abort and I wouldnt love it any less so I cant see any reason for it.

It doesnt end life, it just makes it harder 8)

I never had the test either and i still wouldnt have it with my second.
Downs kids are some of the nicest people i have met, even if i knew i was high risk i would still go through with the pregnancy, yes it would be hard, but she/he would still be loved.

They are both great reasons for not having the test hun. If you dont want to go for it then dont :D

As I said before I didnt have the test first time because I felt the same as you. Bbay will be loved no matter what.... surely thats all that matters :D

im having it done even tho im only 23 but it wouldnt matter if there was something wrong with baby id still keep him/her and love them the same as i do my other children

I'm not young and therefore i guess more at risk but i have decided not to be tested, it wouldn't change my decision to have this baby anyway.

We'll cope whatever and the child will be loved.

No i won't be.

I couldn't have it last time and won't be this time :)

what I dont understand is why they make such a huge deal out of downs? there are so many other illness's that are worse and life threatening yet they insist on screening for this?

I know for some people this is a huge issue but I would much rather a baby with downs that would have a long life than a baby with leukemia that might die very young!

Maybe that just me, but personally I have seen people with downs. They can go to school, have friends, relationships, jobs everything anyone else could. So why is portrayed as such a terrible thing?

Thanks Vicky

There's a little Downs girl that goes to my sons school, she's so pretty, lovely blonde hair, seems to fit in well with the other kids.

I have read a little about Downs as i guess i'm going to be high risk and some do have heart defects, this would devistate me not the fact that my baby was a little different.

Good reasons to all! I feel the same about the loving no matter what and there are worse things that can happen, but i had my bloods screened today. I like being prepared. If i was to have a baby with downs id like to know so i could prepare mentally and physically. Get all the info etc, its hard work but its livable! Im the kind of person who needs to plan and organise! I cant even leave the babys sex for a suprise i have to know!!
I had the tests with jaycee too, and was low risk but i still need to know. plus they tested for lots of other things in my blood too like 7 things in total so it was all together. While im having bloods tested may aswell test for everything!
:)

I don't want the test as I would happily keep the baby, Down's is nothing scary to me. It wouldn't change how I felt baout the baby. BUT my DF wouldn't cope, so he want's to have the test. I'll do it for him, to put his mind at rest, but I wouldn't abort anyway and he knows that.
