hi ladies,

i hope you are all well?

to start, i was diagnosed with pcos when i was very young, between 12-14 years old. since ttc (started in may) i have become increasingly consicous of the fact that i have it.

a while ago i had a miscarriage and at a scan just after they told me i have very very mild pcos - yay! but of course i still worry about it so, i asked a doctor just over a month ago if i could have the day 21 test to see if i am ovulating, i had it and when the result came back they told me over the phone it was normal - of course being a crazy ttc'er that wasn't going to be enough info so i asked the receptionist to print my results - big mistake! i tried to work out what it meant and convinced myself they had it wrong and that it wasn't ok - that obscure website told me so!!!
had my appt yesterday to follow it up and apparently the level (whatever that means) should be between 10-80 and i was 29 which is normal - woo hoo i ovulated.

so after that i decided to get some general advice on conception as this doctor specialises in fertility.

she said (as so many BFP'ers have) the best thing is to relax, she said the most fertile period is immediately after AF??? i thought that was a bit mad but i suppose if AF is around 7 days she's not far off.

she said that if you are unwell in any shape or form (i have IBD) the body can stop itself falling preggers as its not in a 'good place'.

next, she told me to stop using OPK's and to just have sex from after AF until about day 20 every other day!? now i know i have been 'bigging up' her fertility specialist claims but i can't give up the OPK's - no way jose!

finally, she told me that if i don't conceive in about 6 months time she will refer me for further testing and possibly IVF!! she said its supposed to be 2 years but doesn't see any point in couples waiting around!! which is good in one way but also tests and issues seem a lot closer now!!! im really not sure if it was a good appt or a bad one lol!!??

xxx

Does she actually have a qualification in "fertility"?

I'm sorry but the information she gave you about being the most fertile during your cycle being right after AF is completely unfounded.

I can't find a reference to it anywhere and i've been looking ages now.

Are you sure that she didn't mean to say that you can have sex as soon as AF is over and you might get pregnant or something like that?

The cervix closes after AF and doesn't open again until you are close to OV.

Sperm can't get inside unless the cervix is open.

I don't think that relaxing is something you can pysically do, it's a mind set. You can sit on your back all day long and do nothing at all re OPKs or anything but if your mind is constantly on it then you are not going to be relaxed.

Ask to see her fertility certificates.

well there is a screen in the doctors which has someone telling you what each of them does and it says she specialises in fertility and teaches at the local hospital in this area! i wonder if she said that so that i dont just focus on ov time so it's less pressured for oh? i mean i ov on day 14. af is 5-7 days so its only a matter of a few days before i could start bd'ing??

re: her fertility certificates, i dont want to pee her off too much as she is willing to send me for further tests at 12 months :)

I think the appointment sounds like it went well to be honest!
She sounds positive that she will somehow get you pregnant even if it is not naturally so I would not worry about that!
I dont think she would have purposly 'lied' or 'misslead' you so I think if you doubt anything she has said then maybe it would be best to get a second opinion? I agree not to pee her off by asking to see her certificates etc.
Please dont go searching the internet as it is not the best place for concrete evidence, the best place to get the answers is from a professional.
All in all TRY to relax as much as possible, maybe try self hypnosis or relaxation cds? I know how hard it is to relax, I suffer from mental health illness and have recently come off my meds to conceive so I am there with you on the 'stress' front, but all we can do is try :)

Sounds like it went well. Hopefully it's put your minds at ease re OV and PCOS.
Baby dust xxx

Hi, my fertility lady also told me to get jiggy with it just after AF every other day (I would but unfortunately it doesn't work out how it should :-( ). She was trying to get me to stop stressing around ovulation and just enjoy the whole process of baby making - good advice no doubt ... but easier said than done, everything is hinged on OV time! My body is also not 100% well as I have IBS but am trying acupuncture to see if that can lessen my symptons. Baby dust to all ! x

I suffer from IBS too, let me know if you have any luck with the acupuncture.
Baby dust!! :dust:

I think the acupuncture is beginning to work ... I haven't had a migraine (which is a big thing that goes hand in hand with my IBS) for nearly 7 weeks now. Have gone wheat and gluten free aswell which is probably helping with that too but am living for the day when I can confidently stop taking loperamide (GP says the tablets won't affect TTC success rate but I'm not so sure). One fab thing about it is how relaxed I feel afterwards, such an amazing feeling of contentedness :)

yeah ibs (i call it ibd) is horrible, i'm on medication every day as well, the doctor said i'm ok ttc while on it and i've looked it up about 100 times so i'm sure it will be fine, would be good to have it under control though and be as healthy as possible during ttc.

i agree that the docs say to ttc a bit earlier so it isnt so 'structured' around ov - hey im not preggers so far so i'm gonna try what the doc said, it can't hurt! thanks ladies, i knew that what she was telling me was positive but when she mentioned ivf and further tests it sort of worried me. xxx

I think they do that to keep you informed on every step of the way. My gyno GP told me right from the start that she'd start with blood tests and smear test, then sperm tests, then HSG (which is this Tues!!!!!), then if that's ok then keep going for a few months before IVF. Could be a whole diff story tho if HSG shows blocked tubes or something then I s'pose they'll advise the diff route from there. Oh well, just got to wait for Tuesday to find out if we're 'unexplained infertility' or whether there is an underlying prob. Am comforted to hear that someone else has been reassured that being on medication is ok when TTC x

My best friend, who has 4 babies!! and is a bit of an expert at getting pregnant :) has told me all along that with at least the last 2 of her babies (one is 2 months old) she conceived right after AF...she knows the exact night. She had just finished AF and they woke up in middle of night, had a bit of 'sexy time' and went back to sleep......she told me to really try not to move about too much after Bding and she swears by the after Af thing.....xx

thanks sams girl! i'm deffo going to do this, i'm still just 'finishing' af (tmi) so if by sunday it has completely gone i'm gonna try to start bd'ing from next monday 25th. i'm due to ov from 29th but ov varies between cd's 14/15/16 so from 29th to 1 november i believe it will be my most fertile period.

i'm also going to bd for 3 or so days after that as i have never done that before and i believe that last month clairebear conceived after ov!? (hope that's right!) so all in all its going to be a busy 10 days or so from next week!

a few months' back OH came home from work and said his boss told him that you are supposed to 'do it' 5 days before ov every other day and 5 days after every other day and he has 3 kids! when oh told me i totally dismissed it but now im starting to think its the way forward!! xxx

well i have had smiley faces on OPK last 2 days......line getting fainter tonight though so i think i either ovulated this morning or yesterday...did some BDing earlier, so fingers crossed.....only my first proper month of trying, came off pill in september, so i would be VERY lucky to fall pregnant just yet, but would be a nice christmas pressie for everyone xx

yeah i use the clearblue digital ovulation kits, i stop testing once i get the smiley face!? so do you get it for more than one day with the lines dark for more than one day? x

well i tested on tuesday night and there was no smile....but the line was a tiny bit darker than the day before, so i had an inkling something was happening. as this is my first month of trying them, i started at day 9.....good job really! cos then on day 10 (20th oct) there was a smiley face and 2nd line was very dark, did another in the middle of the night, still smile and line still dark and then done another this evening and smile still there and 2nd line still dark, but not quite as dark as wednesday.....so i have had smiley faces for 48 hours now....but there normally is the LH surge for about 48 hours isn't there?? and then does egg pop out usually about 24-36 hours after first surge....not sure xx

yeah that makes sense! i'll poas for a day or so after i get the smiley face this month xx

i am just curious as to what goes on....with me being new to all this.....even my OH got involved tonight...lol xx

Hi Girls,

I usually get smiles 2 days in a row then no smile the day after.

Positivity don't worry about the docs, I guess they're all different, sometimes they say nothing and that gets you worried because you think they don't want tell you worst outcome or like in your case they are more open and honest.

It sounds like you have good one there hun.

Good luck girls! xxx
