Why can't you keep the print out when you give birth?

Yeah, why can't you? You know the print out of your contractions and the babies heart beat that they have monitored.

I asked for Isaacs and they said no because they have to keep it on file for something daft like 12 years I remember her saying

Do you think they study them to monitor how us women give birth or do you think they use the data for study and teaching? Surely its our data and we should have a right to have it, if only a copy?

With data protection laws too surely they couldn't use it for anything after without our permission could they?

When I had my booking in with the midwife she brought out my my file which had all the records in from when i was having George (which is obviously 12 years ago now). I was really suprised they had all that still i never realised they kept if for so long.

 emmmmm...

If I were the type to believe in conspiracy theories and corruption I'd say we are being closely watched and monitored

 I think you are right.

I got a copy of mine when I requested a copy of all my maternity and labour notes.
(cost me £30 though)
They keep them for legal reasons I think (although they probably have other reasons too... - cue creepy x-files music- )

£30 :o

They should give out copies for free -it's our information after all.

Lovely thing to keep though. Especially the labour print out of contractions and heart beat. What a reminder!!!! :D I would've paid £30 to have a copy. Shouldn't have to pay though I agree :x

They keep it longer than that don't they? When my sister was 19 she requested all her medical notes from the birth and all my mum's maternity notes were requested too as she was considering suing for malpractice. If a child is left disabled through human error or neglect at birth they can sue up till when they're 21 so I guess they'll need to keep them for that?

How did you go about getting a copy of your notes? I want some cos I still think there were things I wasn't told about Ryan's birth. If I got a copy of them would it include Josh's birth too?

£30 though.... pffft :shakehead:

I just checked out my hospital's website and it says copies of records are £50! :( Shame cos I really fancied getting them.

This has reminded me of something....

When I was younger I was in hospital having day surgery and I was left waiting with my notes, of course I looked and read that I have spina bifida occulta. I had some tests when I was 13 for clicky hips and this is what they found. My parents were never told  I confronted my doctor and was told they didn't tell me as it wasn't 'significant' However when I ws pregnant with Isaac I had to go and see the anethetist (sp) at the hospital to make sure I could have an epidural and they concluded that I would have to have it placed higher in my spine because my spine is slightly split. When Isaac was born they also found he has a sacral dimple and I have one too I never knew about!!!! Isaac then had to have x-rays to make sure he didnt have spina bifida but luckily was given the all clear.

(and when I was caught reading my notes btw they told me they could fine me £10 for reading them)

Also I still don't know why I had to have an assisted delivery with Isaac? I assume he was stuck but I was prepped for a c-section but they then just whipped him out with forceps. I'd love to know why they did that  Its something I will worry about if I have another baby.

you can request a copy if you want them but they keep them with all your other medical records for future reference. my first birth changed dramatically for the worse towards the end because i dilated so fast and it stressed her out. they kept all the monitorings etc in the file and all details of reannas birth. this time round when i went to be induced the mw told me because of my previous birth she would be with me throughout and not leave the room and she also told me from how i dilated last time that she knew i wouldnt be long this time and that she had to monitor kayla to make sure they know this time when she is getting stressed. she was right my birth was only 2 hours and kayla did get stressed but luckily it was not as urgent or traumatic as the first birth.

xxxxx

i'd love to read through my notes but don't see why i should have to pay :shakehead: :shakehead:

Well if we all wanted our notes, or even a small portion of the women giving birth, it'd cost a fair bit of money to provide duplicates. NHS is cash strapped as it is, for right or wrong reasons.

They have to keep original records for their files. Same as any company or business etc. We dont as a rule ask for medical files in anything else, our GP holds those. Making hospital copies is not normally done as standard. Makes sense to me :)

I don't think there is anything wrong with charging for a copy if someone specifically wants them. OK, maybe £50 is steep, but tbh, if its all off of monitors and so on, they may have to have someone specifically get that sort of info and it all takes time and effort.

idk i didnt get none but i had melissa at home maybe thats why. i think its a good idea that people are charged £50 if they want them, the nhs need money so we can continue giving birth for free!

Oh thought I would add, you can request a copy up to I think 30 days after the birth and they are free (or at least they were at the hospital I had DD )

I like that the hospital keep them, when I go in for this one, they will be able to look at what happened during Brody's birth and maybe it will help them if I have problems with labour and stuff.
