Just wondering what conception vitamins everyone takes?

I started taking pregnacare ages ago and then not long after started spotting before periods, which had never happened before. So I stopped taking them and went back to vitamin d and folic acid. The spotting continued so I figured it must be a coincidence and went back to taking them. However I’ve been googling and there are a lot of people who say they started spotting before af after taking pregnacare. I don’t know what to do...whether to carry on using them, use a different brand altogether or just go back to basics, using folic acid and vitamin d. Xx

Unless your diet isn't very good I would say you only need Folic acid. I was told by a midwife that I didn't need anything else in TTC or first 12 weeks.

I only take supermarket brand folic acid. I drink actimel every morning as has b6 and vit d. I eat plenty of veggies and have a balanced diet so I'm getting what I need.

Lots of people report various symptoms with Pregnacare. I didn't have any issues but I eventually switched to a cheaper own brand version and then to folic acid/vit d only as I was fed up wasting money by that point. I agree with Jellybean in that if you have a good diet then the folic acid/vit d is all you need.

Thanks girls, think I’m gonna stick to the basics now and I’ll look into drinking actimel too! If nothing else, it’ll save me a lot of money! X

If actimel aren't on offer I get Tesco's own b6 vit d yoghurt drinks. Strawberry ones taste v nice!

I actually found it refreshing to step back from what felt like all the pointless things I was taking which were just costing me money. For what I was saving, me and OH could better spend the money on a meal out together or something similar. It just felt like a much better use of our time. It was a bit like taking back control and making a stand that I wasn't going to pin all my hopes on supplements being the miracle solution as if anything we tried was going to help, it would have done by then. My mental state was just so much better for it.

Yes. Your mental state can really be tested during ttc and the journey beyond. Definitely keep it all as natural as possible.

<3 you’re so right! Xx

I have been taking supplements but as I’m on a plant based diet (essentially vegan) I thought it was important to make sure I had the right nutrients. Iron supplements in particular made a huge difference for me, even before TTC. Otherwise I’m not sure I’d bother taking them other than the key ones like folic acid.

I think supplements are totally fine if you know you're likely to be deficient in certain areas. Otherwise, I think they're just a waste of money as your body will just pee out any excess if you're getting enough from your diet.

Thanks SO much for posting this, you may have solved my problem. I take Cyptoplan PregnaPlan vitamins and have an issue with spotting the week before my period. I’m going to see what happens if I stop and just go back to folic acid & vitamin D. I’ll update next month if the spotting stops. I wasn’t aware they had this side effect but after googling it now you’re right, lots of people experiencing it!

I’m not 100% sure that they do have an effect, it could be a coincidence! But like the girls say, if you eat well and have a healthy lifestyle I think just taking folic acid and vitamin d is enough. Also, when I stopped taking it before, the spotting did continue even when I wasn’t taking it x
