What happens? In the films this always seems to signify the start of full on labour.....but from reading posts on here it can be a few days before anything else starts to happen. Do you have to go straight to hospital when it happens and how likely is it that labour will start? Guess I should get reading up on this! :)

Well i dont have any experiance on this as i was in labour with harrison and my waters didn't even break, the MW's at the hospital had to break my waters for me.

So i guess i want to know aswell.

My waters broke at night (at 39 weeks and 3 days) and nothing happened. I called the hospital for advice and they told me I'd probably peed myself!! I was told to put on a pad and if it was soaked through quickly to call back. It was soaked within a minute as was the floor on the way to the bathroom! I had to go in to get checked to be told I wasn't dilated at all. I was sent home but made to go back for monitoring the next day, leaking all the while because your body replenishes the fluid as it's lost!

After 48 hours I still hadn't gone into labour (though had pains that were more than BH) and was induced because the risk of infection is very high once your membranes have ruptured and I was also put on IV antibiotics as a precaution.

mine broke 39 weeks in bath at 8pm but by 10pm i was having strong contractions, but stayed a home until 3am, harriet was born 9am

i know i know, we covered this in our anti natal class last week! In 20% of case the first sign is waters breaking, for 80% of woman will get contractions first.

Of the 20%, 80% of them will start contractiosn within 24 hours, the others wotn and will need to be induced to prevent infection.

You should call the hospital if your waters break as a first sign so they know in advance their advice will most likely be to wait but if no contractiosn to come in after a specified amoutn of tiem.

When my step mums waters broke she didn't have contractions at first but was told to come into hospital because they like to check you once the waters have broken

My waters broke at home after 5 hours of first stage labour. I had a homebirth so its a bit different, but I gave birth 7 hours or so later.

If in labour and waters go its a bit different to not being in labour and having it happen. Best to do some reading up on it. Hospitals seem to like to have a woman in to check her if waters break before labour. Often they don't actually go until well into labour though :) My MW does not believe in breaking the waters and would have left them unless there was a good reason to break them (had they not gone already).

Hope that made some sense. Bit tired atm

My mum had my brother on the living room floor and the waters didn't break. He was born in the caul which is supposed to be a sign of good luck or something.x

EDIT* Was 20 minute labour start to finish, ambulance didn't get there in time, and mums OH and her friend delivered Sam at 5 in the morning.

Every labour is different though obviously.
I was in slow labour for a week!

My waters broke at around 4pm on Sunday evening and had no contractions at all until 3am when they come on fast and strong  I had him at 8.07am Monday morning :)

I did have to go to hospital but that was because I was only 35 weeks when they broke :)

my waters broke when i was over 8 cm dilated he was born 53 minutes later :)

My waters broke at 8.30am, no contractions till 10am but they just started off niggly pains. Hostpital advised me to come in at 7pm for a check up or if there was any bleeding or when the pain from the contractions got too much for me to handle to go in then.

mine broke with harrison at 12am I had contractions but they stopped when I got to 3cm, I then had to be induced the next day x Labout was fast tho at 1 hour 33 mins!

My waters broke at 1130, and the hospital wanted me to come in after a shower and a chill out to check me over - they said there would be no rush. Contractions started at 1230 and I was 6cm dilated at 2pm. Baby was here by 5pm. But it's different for everybody!!
