My little boy is just coming up for 11 months old and I am starting to think about changing his formula milk for cows milk but not sure how and when is best to do it?

I was told to do it when my son turned one and just directly switch from formula to cows milk, which we did with no weaning involved - a straight switch and he didn't bat an eyelid at it.

What type of cows milk did you use? Was it whole milk or semi skimmed?

Same as rooster. We just switched from formula to whole milk at a year.

You should really give them whole milk as they still need the extra calories and fat.

You need to use whole milk. They shouldn't have 'low fat' dairy. So cheese / butter / yoghurts etc need to be full fat.

We just switched as well and James didn't notice (or if he did he wasn't bothered). We did it after his first birthday.

Thank you so much ladies, will hold off until he is 1 hopefully he takes to it as well as your little ones have

Does anyone know how to do this when your lo has never had formula? I breast feed and tried it with him in a sippy cup and a bottle but he spat both out. I'm really worried about his calcium intake!

Girly I breastfed my eldest till 13 months and she never took to cows milk so I just made sure she got her calcium in other ways. From age 1-3 they need 350mg of calcium a day and she has a large bowl of ready Brek with full fat milk then a yeo valley yogurt and that brings the calcium to around 450mg. She's now two and and growing as she should be. I have an NHS leaflet with foods high in calcium, I can upload pics of it to here if you like?x

I swapped his night bottle to cows from 11ms for a few weeks and then completely changed.
Had no issues :) xx

I used milk in foods (mash potato and cereal) before switching around a year. I think after he turned 11 months i bought 1 more tub and then once that run out I switched to cows milk.

I gave DS FF cows milk at around 11 months in a bottle one night as an emergency (was staying out and his formula pot had popped open and emptied in the bag).

He wasn't bothered at all.

I bought one more formula tub the next day, used that, then just went to cows milk. Xx

Cows milk as a drink is from 1 and full fat stuff

But they can have it with cerial, cooking wtc from 6 months so you can introduce that way to begin with if yuk havnt already :)

No idea sorry. My LO always had his milk, formula and then cows milk out a bottle. Ever since we got rid of the bottle recently (he's almost two now so decided it had to go!), he won't drink milk out of anything else. He is happy to drink water or juice out of a variety of different bottles and cups, even a proper grown up cup. But can I heck get him to drink milk!

We're giving him lots of other calcium rich foods with every meal, lots of cheese and yoghurt, as well as milk in cereals etc. Don't forget lots of green vegetables are calcium rich too, along with certain types of fish. So you can help them get their calcium that way. It doesn't all have to come from dairy.

I started using whole milk at 9months on cereal etc and already using it for drinking during the day - but still use formula if out and during night as easier cos it's powder for taking out, lol.

Etty went off milk altogether for 6 weeks and it was then I tried it in desperate attempt to tempt her to drink milk again!

Hi,

My eldest didn't like moo milk at all, so mixed it with cereal etc for a while. Found formula easier when out tho like others did.

Goat yes please! That would be great. We introduced cows milk into weetabix at around 8 months but he's gone off that now and won't take it with anything else. He's a VERY picky eater and I can list what he'll eat on 2 hands. He hates potato, veg and meat, so you can imagine how hard it is to think of exciting new meals with all the food groups ticked off. Calcium wise, I give him cheese every day ( but he always struggles to poo so I don't think this is great ) and one or two fromarch frais ( but sometimes he's sick after these ) it's such a struggle! Xxx
