Hi ladies, im just wondering what i can use in hospital to wash babys bum etc because im HIGHLY allergic to cotton wool since being pregnant so they reckon LO will be too. will i be allowed to use wipes or will the midwifes basically take bathtime away from me?

My OH will be there obviously during the day im just wondering what about nappy changes at night time?

You may not even be in overnight. When I was in hospital I actually asked them to show me how to bath and change a nappy as I had never done it before. If I hadn't have asked they wouldn't have done it. I was only in hospital for 11 hours in total though and was discharged late afternoon after giving birth early morning.

Hun, its your baby, you can use whatever the hell you want to wipe your baby's bum and dont let the midwives or other mums bully you into anything! Some women use wipes from birth anyway as a matter of choice, as long as you get neutral ones without too many chemicals/fragrance etc they should be fine. Otherwise you could perhaps use some kind of wash cloth that you can rinse each time if you would rather use just water on baby's skin x

I use reusable wipes and warm water. My LO gets irritated even by "sensitive" wipes so that works for us.

I had a homebirth so can't really say about the hospital but just wanted to add that I tried using cotton wool when Poppy was first born a pain in the bum so I ended up using either wipes or I used to use one of those flannel wash mit things once I'd got the worst off with a wipe

I used wipes from birth basically. I found pampers sensitive in the white pack where the mildest. Now he is abit older most of them are fine and don't cause problems, even the fragranced ones.

i've also used wipes for all three ever since they were first born. never had a problem with any :)

There are new pampers wipes out with aloe vera, they're unscented, alcohol free and probably the best I've ever used.

Either those or the ones in the white packet would be fine :)

thanks ladies, i was just thinking about it after my MW was all "cotton wool is a must so im not sure what we are going to do with you" she is a silly moo at the best of times lol but just thought i would ask what you ladies used lol

dont worry sweetie, just take some pampers sensitive in. it's your baby

My midwife insisted on only cotton wool and water at antenatal class and when she told me to pack my hospital bag. I only stayed a few hours after she was born - I'm not sure I even changed a nappy while we were there!

However, Jessica was admitted back through A&E at 2 days old and I insisted on staying with her so we were put on the postnatal ward for 5 days. I was left pretty much to my own devices and used wipes as it was so much easier. I couldn't move very well because of my stitches and if I wanted boiled water I had to get it from the drinks machine and wait for it to cool  which was totally impractical. The washing facilities were so grubby I refused to have a bath while I was in there and Jessica couldn't be bathed because of her cannula so I just washed both of us from head to toe with baby wipes.

One of the health visitors said you need to be careful using cotton wool to clean little girls because of the loose fibres so in retrospect I'm glad I used wipes from birth. My bumper bag of cotton wool balls is still unopened!

I hgave up very quickly with the cotton wool and water - used reusable wipes with warm water instead as they were loads easier and I felt must feel nicer against their skin as they would be warm. It wasn't the reaction with the skin I was worried about, just that so much is absorbed by skin and I wanted her skin to sort itself out before bunging any chemicals on it. reusable wipes are really xheap, ajust get some cheap pound flannels and cut them up.

i used cotton wool and warm water for about 3 weeks, and what a bloody nightmare that was during the night at 3, 4am going to the bathroom to fill the bowl up with warm water
and how many times it ended in disaster too, like dropping the leg part of her babygrow in the bowl so then i'd have to get her changed again while half asleep  (should have kept the bowl away lol)
I find pampers wipes too "wet" and i don't like the smell.
I started buying the asda pink ones, just because they were pink   , but I've never used anything else since.. and they are cheap too, at the minute in asda it's 5 packs for £4 x
