I know that obv.. they bring the labour on.. but how exactly do they do this? Is it via a drug? Or some other way?

Just curious.

One of my friends was recently induced.. and I have no idea about what happens....

note to self - must book up some antinatal classes for myself!!

:)

This is what I was told would happen.....

I was told to come in in the evening and I would be taken to the ward and made comfortable. I would then be given a pessary which would work to soften my cervix and make it favourable. This would work overnight and I would be checked from time to time and more pessary's given if needed. Then in the morning if my cervix was ready I would be given a drip of drugs to start contractions then monitored and then they would take it from there really. Everyone is diferent though so it would depend how you would progress. I was worried my OH wouldn't be there but they said they would call him if anything major happened.

As it turned out I started labour myself the day before my induction was due :)

My sis was given her pessary in the evening and had her daughter by 9am the next morning. Horrible midwives didn't believe she was advanced as she was though and didn't examine her until 6am...poor sis was in established labour most of the night without her partner :(

OMG HB that is terrible

That was a big fear of mine when I was induced with Jamie. I was given the first pessary at about 5pm, second at 11pm and by about 4/5 am was getting quite uncomfortable pains, by 6am they were quite bad but they wouldn't phone hubby until 2pm when the shifts changes occurred.

    That is just cruel! Why do some MW let women battle through on their own, it can't be cindusive to a safe and calm labour. I am terrified of this happening too, I wouldn't be able to get through it without my OH, he always reassures me when I am scared.

I was also so scared I would spend the night alone having contractions. If you are that worried the only option is to book a private room. We considered it but I'm not sure they would've let OH stay over but I also liked the idea of having privacy and not spending a night trying to have contractions quietly and not wake people up. Plus I would have been able to make noise and watch tv in my own room!

With my first son I was given 2 pesseries (sp) one at night and one in the morning. I was then checked and was 1cm dialated so the midwife broke my waters. Things started to kick off then but then slowed down and I was put on the drip to speed things up. Unfortunatly I only got to 5cm before Jack got distressed and I had to have a c-section.

With my 2nd again I had 2 pesseries but they worked this time. They checked me at about 11am and I was 5cm dialated and Harry was born 2 and half hours later!!!

Both very different but wonderful experiences!!!!! :D

I was taken to the delivery suite and given a IV drip inducement. It started gradually with small doses that were regularly upped. I had a moniter on the whole time, was not allowed to get up and even had a bed pan. I would have liked to have walked around and think I may have dealt with it better. My contractions went from mild to excruciating very quickly. I was not offered pesseries but my waters had broken naturally about 40 hours before, so maybe thats why
tbh I was 4 weeks early and I didn't really know what was going on, I just went along with everything they were saying!

I think a lot of people do just go along with what they are told, but this time I am just hoping I can go myself without having to be induced, but my midwife told me that if you go over with your first you are likely to go over again (just hopefully not the full 10 days).

i had a pessery at 1:15pm, strong contractions came from nowhere at 3pm, waters broke 4:40pm, baby born 5:10pm

just seen my midwife and talked about induction, this is what she said..

I have to ring up about 8/8.30am and see if there is a bed available, when you go in they do a vaginal exam etc and depending on how your cervix is depends on how they start you off.

If its not that favourable it'll be a pessary which they insert and you lay still for about 1/2 hour for it to absorb, this is for softening the cervix and try and get things started, after 6 hours they re check to see whats happened and if need be re do another pessary, if that one don't work they wait till morning and start over again.

If you cervix is starting to open and soften they can break your waters, this will usually start off the contractions too, if not they assess you and may give you a drip.

My main concern about induction is i know what labour feels like and i'd prefer to go naturally so the pain builds up slowly rather than kick straight in hard and fast. She said with induction it is still slow starting with the pessary and by having your waters broken, they only time its hard and fast is if they have to use the drip cause its continously fed into your blood stream and being turned up bit by bit but quite fast to make your contractions come hard and fast every 2 mins

I was asking about needing an epi as the way my cervix is at the min i would be started with my waters being broke, She said don't be frightened of the pessary or breaking waters as this is still a nice calm way like a natural labour but if i needed the drip then i might want to consider the epi.

Sorry but it wasnt slow for me! i started with contractions out of knowhere 1hr 45 mins after the pessery! And the were 3 mins apart from the start

I wasn't induced but ended up on the drip as my labour failed to progress, the pain was horrible

 dont be scared, my baby was born on the antenatal ward because it all happened so fast! they had to kick all the other preg women out of my bay lol

so what would happen if the pessaries didn't work and your cervix wouldn't open no matter what???

would that mean a section?

if the pessery or drip doesn't work and they can't break your waters then you'll have to have a section, but its a last resort, after several attempts at pessery and drip x
