What do you tell your lo's about father Christmas?

We are doing elf on a shelf and my lo loves it. It's just a bit of fun imo and shes not having nightmares, in fact, most of her toys (dolls) she plays eith them as if they are real babies lol.

We have stocking and sack presents from Santa and presents from everyone else go under the tree. Apparently we never noticed growing up that our parents never bought us any presents at Christmas, lol, but we are giving one relatively small present from us just in case.

I don't mind the idea of toys coming to life - happens in toy story after all - and I think make believe / magic / fantasy can be good for kids in terms of development / creativity, but I think the elf on the shelf is a bit freaky looking (the official one I mean) and it's not something I'm planning on getting into. I like the idea of opening a present on Christmas Eve and its special Christmas PJs that they wear that night and wake up in on Christmas morning.

Imagination is good for kids, and yes the idea of toys coming to life is presented elsewhere (tv etc) but a parent saying something like that is real is very different. I think kids know tv isn't real life when it's cartoons, but some kids can get mixed up between fantasy and reality for regular shows with people. My niece thinks balamory is a real place where those people really live.

But a parent showing a child a doll elf and telling them it watches them to see if they're naughty or nice makes it real for the child, not fantasy. What mum/dad says is how children navigate their world.

I also think its riskier than telling them Santa is real. And unnecessary. As they get older they'll suss out the elf thing isn't real younger than they would the story of Santa, and if the elf isn't real, none of it is.

My main reason is that it's creepy though (imo). As a child I'd have hated having a doll/toy watch me to see if I was good. My imagination would have run rampant, but not in a positive way. It's just a bit sinister to me.

Its absolutely no different to Santa/tooth fairy/Easter bunny imo.
